COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Police Athletic League in Wilmington is planning a new facility on county-owned land that will include an aquatics center and community services, with an estimated cost of around $10 million—including $5.2 million for the pool—as it aims to give residents better access to swimming lessons. The group has about $1 million available and is seeking more funds and permits, and it will break ground in six to eight months if donor support meets expectations.  Delaware Online

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Delaware leads the nation in tipping with an average of 22.1%—a report by the restaurant platform Toast shows this is the second straight quarter of top tipping rates. The survey collected data from 140,000 restaurants, and full-service spots reported higher tips than quick-service ones.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are searching for the suspect who shot two men on Saturday, June 15 at around 1:30 p.m. at 4th and Franklin in Wilmington—one victim, a 26-year-old man shot at least seven times, is in critical condition while the other, a 35-year-old man, is stable after their car crashed as they tried to drive away.  6abc

  • Delaware offers a guide to six key Underground Railroad sites—several in Wilmington that once helped escaped slaves reach freedom. The list highlights places like Market Street Bridge and Old Town Hall—sites linked to historic figures such as Harriet Tubman and Thomas Garrett.  Delaware Online
  • Wilmington's Clifford Brown Jazz Festival will run from June 18 to June 21 at Rodney Square—offering free jazz concerts that honor the local icon Clifford Brown with headlining acts such as Ingrid Jensen, Victor Wooten, Chante Moore and esperança spalding while drawing visitors from near and far.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delaware’s first community solar farm launched today in Sussex County and will soon power about 750 households and small businesses with 4.7 megawatts generated from 9,000 solar panels on a 35.6-acre site. The project by Nautilus Solar Energy and TurningPoint Energy offers a 20% electric bill discount for low-income customers — the first of six planned installations to help meet the state’s clean energy goals.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that removes the lieutenant governor’s authority over $250 million for addiction services and gives full control to the Delaware Prescription Opioid Settlement Distribution Commission. The bill, introduced by House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown and headed for a Senate committee vote later this week, comes a year after controversy over former Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long’s management of the opioid fund — the commission will also approve $13 million in grants later this month.  Spotlight Delaware
