COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Delaware tree farms remain open this holiday season for shoppers still seeking a fresh Christmas tree. Farmers in Laurel, Greenwood, Harrington, Dover, Middletown, Milton, Odessa, and Smyrna offer various tree types, prices, and festive treats (Santa appears Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) while following seasonal schedules and safety advice.  Delaware Online
  • BVSPCA will host a December Mega Adoption Event on Dec. 13-14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at multiple locations including New Castle, Dover and Georgetown, offering a reduced adoption fee of $35 that covers vaccinations, microchips and spay or neuter services.  WDEL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new Dollar Tree opened in Milltown yesterday at Astro Shopping Center on Capitol Trail, offering kitchen essentials & frozen groceries priced between $1.25 and $5. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Delaware Online showcased photos capturing a close basketball game at Memorial Hall on Dec. 6, the annual Festival of Lights at Delaware Park Casino open until Dec. 20, a statewide Delaware Day Trivia Night near Glasgow on Dec. 4, and light snow falling in New Castle on Dec. 5.  Delaware Online
  • In 2026, Winterthur Museum will celebrate its 75th anniversary (marking Henry Francis du Pont's historic vision) with guided tours on May 15 to 16 and an exhibition opening on May 23. Family-friendly events will highlight American decorative arts and its storied legacy.  Delaware Online

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Labor reported that initial unemployment claims in Delaware decreased from 495 to 472 for the week ending Dec. 6 compared to the week before. Nationally, jobless claims increased to 236,000 from 192,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Polytech high school and adult education electrical programs received roughly 200 tape measures on Friday as a donation in memory of former student Marcus Smith (a 2006 graduate). His mother, Patti Smith, organized the Measure Up for Your Future campaign to help students work safely.  WDEL

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Hellings Builders are constructing an enclosed neighborhood on 43 acres south of Middletown that will include 13 custom single-family homes with one-acre lots and hardwood floors, expected to be move-in ready between July and September 2026 (prices range from $1.3M to $1.5M).  Delaware Online

  • At a Dec. 11 awards banquet, Padua senior Anna Bockius and Tatnall senior Dylan McCarthy were named Delaware’s cross-country runners of the year + Bockius won the girls Division I race with the William L. Gerow Award and McCarthy won the boys D-II race with the Vic Zwolak Award.  Delaware Online
