COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mary Campbell Center celebrated its expansion Thursday by opening four new residential rooms with modern upgrades using American Rescue Plan Act funds and donations, and the $7.3-million project will enhance services for its 68 residents and nearly 200 employees.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Our Delaware Cultural Festival will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Arsht Hall in Wilmington from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—featuring cultural booths, a holiday market, food trucks and kid-friendly activities. Tickets are sold at the door and advance purchase is recommended.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Griffin Theatre presents a live performance of A Charlie Brown Christmas at St. Stephen's in Wilmington that runs December 12-14 and December 19-20 and features local elementary and middle school students reenacting the classic cartoon while exploring the commercialization of Christmas.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, Dec. 4, Christina School Board member Shannon Troncoso resigned after five months due to transparency concerns & discriminatory conduct. The board will soon open a candidate forum on Dec. 8 to fill the vacancy.  Spotlight Delaware
  • UD’s new Financial Planning Center in the FinTech Innovation Hub offers free coaching from seniors Natalie Radebaugh and Giacomo D’Alessandro to help students and staff with financial planning topics like student loans, investing in a 401(k), and retirement planning. Participants can schedule meetings online to gain real-world experience.  University of Delaware
  • Students at Delaware Military Academy participated in their weekly Parade Day — including a uniform inspection — on Dec. 4 in Wilmington.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Dec. 3, New Castle County Executive Marcus Henry and police officials cut a ribbon at Garfield PAL where solar panels, LED lights and air system improvements were installed. The upgrades — which cut energy costs by 23% — will help fund youth programs.  WDEL
  • A Delaware State Police spokesman explained that using a cellphone at a red light is allowed since the vehicle is not moving; however, if it causes inattention or safety risks, a driver might be charged. Officers advise staying focused on the road during busy holiday traffic.  Delaware Online

  • Amit Kumar—an assistant professor at University of Delaware—appeared on PHL17 to share ways to boost holiday happiness with gratitude, and he warned residents to watch for rising holiday scams.  University of Delaware

  • Trainer Vince Copeland won two DSBF preliminary races for 3-year-old pacing fillies at Bally's Dover on Dec. 3 with Git Goin and Bobby’s Grace defeating favorites. The series continued with sophomore male pacers competing on Dec. 4 at 4:10 p.m. + 4:30 p.m.  Deleware State Government
  • Amalia Fruchtman of Cape Henlopen was voted Delaware’s Preseason Girls Basketball Player of the Year after winning an online poll presented by Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists. Her win puts her ahead of nine other nominees.  Delaware Online
