COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction on the new Newark Library reached an important milestone just before Thanksgiving when the first steel beams were placed at the project site—expanding the facility from 26,000 to 40,000 square feet and setting the stage for its spring 2027 opening.  WDEL
  • Delaware has 470 children in foster care as agencies struggle to find enough foster families for teens who need special help with housing, jobs, and transportation when they age out — state officials and partners are working to keep youth close to their communities. More placements and support for older youth are urgently needed to help them become independent adults.  WHYY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Subway is reviving its Sub Club after 20 years by offering a free footlong sub when customers buy three footlong subs or six 6-inch subs — those who sign up and redeem their free sub by Dec. 10 will also have a chance to win $10,000 or an authentic Subway baking oven. Fans can join through the Subway app, website, or by visiting a local store, including the one on N. King St. in Wilmington.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brian Market, general manager of Pine Box Studios, said the studio supports local filmmakers, musicians and creators by offering studio services and planning new projects. He added the space is becoming a key hub for creative talent in Delaware — a sign of the area's growing arts scene.  DETV
  • Historic New Castle will host the Spirit of Christmas on December 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—the event lets visitors tour decorated homes and museums, shop at local markets, listen to live music and catch a tree lighting ceremony in Market Square.  Delaware LIVE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the University of Delaware, English professor Matt Kinservik redesigned his writing course this fall to teach students to work with AI by having them first complete research without it and then use a chatbot to draft a 2,000-word essay. The project requires students to revise the AI output to correct errors (highlighting both the benefits and limits of AI in college work), which prepares them for future careers.  WHYY
  • Wilmington high schooler Satya Kokonda founded CompetifyHub, a nonprofit that now offers free math and biology resources to over 1,600 students worldwide. He started the group on Discord in 2024, won a $280 grant in July to support local access to science equipment—and plans to add chemistry and physics soon.  Spotlight Delaware

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Wilmington is accepting applications for essential home repairs through a lottery scheduled for December 17th. Homeowners who meet income and owner-occupancy guidelines can apply by calling 311 or visiting the city website—city leaders say the program will help keep homes safe.  WDEL
  • Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Fire Safety Research Institute warn that lithium-ion batteries in tech gadgets can overheat, spark fires, and even explode if they are damaged or overcharged. They urge shoppers to follow safe charging and recycling steps — including proper storage practices — to help prevent accidents during the holiday season.  Deleware State Government

  • Researchers from UD and Brown University were awarded a $2.6 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to study blood pressure treatment for nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s and related dementia. They will analyze electronic health records—linking prescribing patterns with treatment outcomes—to develop safer, data-driven hypertension guidelines.  University of Delaware
