COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, Wilmington City Council delivered 2,500 turkeys to local seniors and families at Urban Promise Wilmington, Parkview Apartments, and William Hicks Anderson Community Center to help ease rising living costs. Councilmembers stressed the need to preserve the Thanksgiving tradition and praised volunteers who supported the drive—continuing a legacy that began with past community leaders.  Delaware Public Media

  • Christiana Mall added new retailers just in time for holiday shopping—Pop Mart, Perfumania, and the reopened Lego store now welcome shoppers. A new menswear shop, Jack & Jones will open at the mall in early 2026.  Delaware Online
  • Food Lion said on November 12 that it will offer a $40 meal deal to feed 10 people — the deal includes a frozen turkey with sides and desserts. The promotion requires digital coupons and is available in stores and through Food Lion To Go until November 27.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers are invited to nominate students for Delaware’s Mock 2nd Continental Congress—an event scheduled for Friday, May 1 that will let students experience a simulation of early American government in a role-playing setting.  Deleware State Government
  • Parents in Delaware working during Thanksgiving break may need to decide if their children can safely stay home alone as early as Wednesday. Experts say children around 11 or 12 might be ready if they have a plan with emergency contacts and set rules for phone use, cooking, and visitors—advice to help parents make a safe choice.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AAA forecasts more than 20% of Delawareans will travel for Thanksgiving as state officials plan a DUI checkpoint in New Castle County on November 26 and offer Lyft/Uber vouchers from 3 p.m. November 26 to 3 a.m. November 27 to keep roads safe—Amtrak is adding cars and extra trips to handle record holiday travel.  Delaware Online
  • State agencies DEMA, OHS, DelDOT and i.g. Burton Auto Group will observe Winter Weather Awareness Week from December 1 to 5 to promote road safety in a campaign where Burton dealerships in Newark, Dover and Lewes will give away 100 free car safety packs — a plan aimed at helping drivers prepare for winter hazards.  Deleware State Government
  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is launching its annual auction of low digit surf fishing plates today with bids starting at $250 and plates such as numbers 48 and 89 available only to locally registered vehicles. Bidding will continue online until December 11 and proceeds will benefit state parks.  WDEL

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Castle County officials have asked lawmakers to ban the practice of listing nominal sale prices such as $1 or $10 on property records+ saying it hinders accurate property reassessments. Lawmakers are reviewing the proposal+ which could improve transparency in property valuation and tax calculations following concerns raised during the recent statewide reassessment.  Spotlight Delaware

  • A photo gallery shows DIAA football champions from 2015-24 who won at venues like Delaware State University’s Alumni Stadium, Delaware Stadium, Dover High and the new Abessinio Stadium — all teams celebrated by hoisting the Delaware-shaped trophy. The 2025 championships will be held on Nov. 28-29 with Middletown facing Salesianum, Indian River playing Red Lion Christian and Newark Charter meeting Seaford.  Delaware Online
  • Voting is open for Delaware Online Football Athlete of the Week for high school performances on Nov. 21-22 presented by Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists.
