Good morning, Wilmington. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 18th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After the government shutdown ended and SNAP benefits were restored, the Food Bank of Delaware has faced a surge in demand over the past six weeks—CEO Cathy Kanefsky noted that Newark’s healthy pantry center had 564 first-time visitors and Milford had 391 in October, with a week in early November seeing nearly 900 households served. The bank has also run mobile pantries to help National Guard members and furloughed workers.  WDEL
  • Santa will visit numerous Delaware venues before Christmas, with stops at malls, parades, and holiday markets in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties — families can book appointments online or join walk-ups at select locations. The visits allow local children to meet Santa in a festive setting while many events require advance registration.  Delaware Online
  • Mountaire Farms will pack 15,250 Thanksgiving meal boxes on November 22 that include a roaster chicken — holiday staples like stuffing, yams, and cranberry sauce will fill each box to support families across Delmarva amid rising food costs.  Delaware LIVE
  • Rising food costs and cuts to SNAP benefits have driven higher daily meal demand at Wilmington nonprofits, with St. Patrick's Center serving about 200 people every day. Local groups and volunteers are planning new ways to collect donations and ensure access to varied meals—efforts that continue as food drives taper after the holiday season.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Lt. Gov Kyle Evans Gay served as dean for a day at UD’s College of Health Sciences and toured a high-fidelity simulation lab and a state-funded anatomy lab — programs that train future healthcare workers and serve nearly 40,000 patients— to learn how the college strengthens healthcare and workforce development in Delaware.  University of Delaware
  • The Redding Consortium is hosting two virtual town halls today and tomorrow to get public input on three options for changing Wilmington and New Castle County school districts, held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. today and from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. The group will use the feedback at a December 16 meeting and then present a full plan to the State Board of Education—hoping to implement changes by the end of the decade.  WDEL
  • Emma Oehmke from Troop 1024 in Sussex County became the first Eagle Scout by completing a 106-hour service project—Cat Scratchers for First State Animal Shelter—that helped the shelter save funds for food and care, and three local Scouts from New Castle County also earned Eagle Scout status with their own service projects. This achievement underscores that leadership and community service remain highly valued in our area.  Delaware LIVE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council will soon review a proposed ordinance that sets age, helmet, and speed limits for e-bikes and e-scooters—aiming to ban their use on sidewalks and address rising public safety concerns. The proposal follows near-misses reported by local officials and aims to safeguard riders and pedestrians alike.  WDEL
  • Delaware’s holiday laws guide explains that vehicle decorations must meet specific light rules—no more than four bright lights and no red lights—as well as local restrictions on yard displays and homeowners association regulations. The guide also details that cutting trees from public parks is illegal and burning holiday trees must follow state environmental rules—violations can cost from $100 to $500 and tax deductions for donations require proper records.  Delaware Online

HEALTH NEWS
