COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UD and government officials broke ground on the new Kristol Center for Jewish Life on Oct. 26 to support UD’s growing Jewish community. The 18,000-square-foot facility will offer study areas, lounges, a large event hall, and worship space and is expected to be finished by spring—creating a lasting home for Jewish life on campus.  University of Delaware

  • USA TODAY Co. is the new name for Gannett Inc., which runs Delaware Online, announced at ADWEEK’s Brandweek on Nov. 4 in Atlanta — the change will help the company focus on digital news delivery.  Delaware Online

  • Erick Sahler displays his nostalgic travel poster prints and illustrations in an exhibition — Here, There & Delaware: Travel Poster Prints & Illustrations of Erick Sahler — in Odessa. The works evoke bygone times and offer visitors a distinct glimpse into Delaware's past.  Bay to Bay News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers and staff in Smyrna picketed before the local high school football game against Dover on November 1, and union leaders stated that educators and support personnel should not expect local pay raises for the next two years. Smyrna High students also posed for photos at the homecoming dance on October 25—highlighting a busy period at the school.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DHSS and DNREC launched a PFAS outreach grant today to help community groups secure funding for projects that raise chemical awareness. A public webinar will run at 6 p.m. led by state experts, and virtual office hours are scheduled through November, December and January—guiding applicants through the process.  Deleware State Government

FINANCE NEWS

  • Delaware Electric Cooperative will return $5M in capital credits to its 74,000 members this November. Members served in 2013 will soon see the credit applied to their accounts + confirming the financial adjustment.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings filed a motion in federal court to back US Wind’s plan for an offshore wind farm off the Delmarva coast, saying the project will pay for a $200 million upgrade to the power grid. Her filing defends the permits amid ongoing legal challenges and comes as state and Maryland officials show support — while critics remain opposed.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Today, Delaware House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown and Sen. Darius Brown host a press conference and two food drives at the Walnut Street YMCA in Wilmington and the Bear-Glasgow YMCA in Newark starting at 10 a.m. to aid families who lost SNAP benefits during the shutdown. Gov. Matt Meyer declared a state of emergency — using state funds to refill SNAP cards week by week — and urged residents to bring reusable bags — as none will be provided — to the events.  Delaware Online

  • In the DIAA Girls Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals, Lake Forest advanced in five sets over Newark Charter and Tower Hill earned a sweep over Archmere—today at the Carpenter Center, Lake Forest will face Tower Hill at 6 p.m. while Saint Mark's meets Caravel at 8 p.m. with the championship scheduled for Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.  Delaware Online
