CULTURE NEWS

  • The 49th Annual Grand Gala will take place on December 5 at The Grand’s historic Opera House on Market Street and the Hotel Du Pont, where Bruce Hornsby and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra—conducted by Rob Moose—will perform. The event will raise funds to support local artists, students, and families in Wilmington.  Delaware Online
  • Zwaanendael Museum will showcase the Lewes Merman exhibit this Halloween. The display features figures once called FeJee Mermaids by showman P.T. Barnum— though they are not proof of real sea creatures.  Bay to Bay News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Workers' compensation insurance rates in Delaware decreased for the ninth year—Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro noted that the voluntary market dropped by 11.6% and the residual market by 9.08% on average. Businesses that participated in the Workplace Safety Program saved nearly $5 million, with savings varying by policy.  Delaware Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delaware officials released a report on Oct. 21 after reviewing 103 fatal overdose cases from 2022 and recommended expanding treatment options, improving police training, and increasing shelter access to reduce future opioid deaths. The report noted that nearly 92% of the victims had fentanyl in their systems—information that may guide further efforts to improve care.  Delaware Online
  • Veolia issued a boil water advisory for about 50,000 customers in Christiana, Brookside, Bear, and New Castle after a large transmission main broke on Oct. 25 and lowered water pressure—residents must boil water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth until tests show the water is safe.  Delaware Online
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a global effort to educate people about the disease, promote early detection, and support research and services for those affected. A local coalition is drawing support for screening and early detection efforts—vital steps to help community members understand their risks.  Bay to Bay News

  • Delaware home sales of existing houses rose to 1,177 in September with the median sold price dropping to $388,083 while inventory increased 18.6% compared with last year—Sussex County had the highest prices and New Castle County saw homes sell the fastest.  Delaware Online

  • Delaware high school fans can cast a free vote until midnight Oct 30 to choose the best Class 2A cheerleading squad—voters will help decide the winner, which will be announced Oct 31, and the top squads from each class will move on to a final vote in November.  Delaware Online
