COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials with West End Neighborhood House raised over $40,000 at the 2nd annual Fire Truck Pull where 16 teams of eight pulled Wilmington Fire Department Squad 4 across a parking lot outside Frawley Stadium on October 18—boosting funds for the House.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Milton Theatre announced the vibrant cast for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and the production will run Nov. 20—Dec. 14.  Bay to Bay News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UD Summer Founders alumni Joel Amin and Bryce Fender transformed their 2017 venture into Wilminvest — a company managing 33 Wilmington properties to help families facing housing instability — while entrepreneur Maya Nazareth built Alchemize Fightwear from customer interviews and will appear on Shark Tank at 10 p.m. today.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delaware is hosting the ASMFC’s 83rd Annual Meeting Oct. 27-30 at Hyatt Place Dewey Beach—fisheries managers will vote on proposed changes to striped bass, horseshoe crab and Atlantic menhaden plans, and anglers, commercial fishers and conservationists may attend in person or online to offer input.  Deleware State Government

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University of Delaware’s research centers hosted a conference in August that brought together state housing leaders, local agencies, and nonprofits to discuss strategies for reducing homelessness and protecting federal housing resources—efforts led by the Center for Community Research and Service and the Institute for Public Administration. The event highlighted collaborative solutions that build on decades of research and public service to address Delaware’s housing challenges.  University of Delaware
  • New Castle County is testing a pilot program for homeless families that will use federal dollars to provide up to two years of cash assistance—along with case management—to help cover rent at the HOPE Center. The county will start working with the first families before the end of the year and plans to hold a launch event at the HOPE Center on Friday.  Spotlight Delaware
  • SNAP benefits will not be distributed in November, leaving Delaware residents to seek help from local food programs + county officials have provided a list of alternative food sites. Residents are urged to contact these programs soon to ensure timely access to food supplies.  Delaware Online
  • Today, Governor Matt Meyer announced the launch of his new biweekly podcast Matt Chats where he interviews Delaware leaders and public figures making a difference—new episodes will be released every other week on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and Substack.  Deleware State Government

HEALTH NEWS

  • A team at the University of Delaware won a $12.1 million NIH grant to build a center that develops new tools to measure tiny processes in cells to help understand and treat diseases. The five-year grant (which may be extended twice) will support research on tests for Alzheimer’s, heart disease and chronic pain while expanding lab facilities.  University of Delaware

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Delaware's home market remained active as buyers struggled with affordability while median listing prices reached just over $418,000 and homes spent an average of 42 days on the market — nearly 1,200 homes sold statewide with a slight dip in median sales prices to $388,000.  WDEL

  • Two Blue Jays with strong Delaware ties will compete in the World Series as they face the Los Angeles Dodgers starting Oct 24.
