COMMUNITY NEWS

  • High tide came and went Monday afternoon at Bowers Beach leaving low areas flooded as water slowly receded into the Murderkill River. Neighbors warned to stay out of the water and said the flooding is significant but familiar as water levels will drop before the next high tide at 4 a.m. Tuesday.  WDEL
  • Wilmington opened Rodney Reservoir Park last week at the old reservoir site on 9th, Rodney, Clayton and 8th streets, offering walking trails, natural playground equipment and benches. The park will add a community garden in spring 2026—fall festivals are also scheduled including one on October 29.  Delaware Public Media
  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the New Castle County Division of Police is using a display in the Public Safety Building to share help and resource information for those affected—after responding to 5,027 DV-related calls from January 1 to October 13, officers show how domestic violence continues to impact families. The display highlights available support and aims to strengthen community safety.  New Castle County Police Department
  • Many Delaware towns set Halloween trick-or-treat times for Oct. 31—most allow candy collection from 6 to 8 p.m. while some offer earlier events or block parties, and Wilmington has no set curfew.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Four women—Claire DeMatteis, Charlotte King, Charlotte Miller-Lacy, and Valerie Biden Owens—were inducted into Delaware’s Women’s Hall of Fame on October 13, recognizing their contributions in politics, law, social justice, and community activism, and they join 170 honorees since 1981.  Delaware Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Delaware Division of Small Business said more than $4 million in federal funds is available for small businesses, but the funds must be allocated to help reach a $14 million goal by December 31. The program, launched in April at The Mill Space in downtown Wilmington, works with banks and credit unions to provide loans that support local entrepreneurs.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jenna DiEleuterio, a reading specialist at Talley Middle School in Brandywine School District, was named Delaware’s 2026 State Teacher of the Year Tuesday in Dover — she is now the state’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year and will represent educators by addressing community groups and business leaders, as announced by Secretary of Education Cindy Marten.  Deleware State Government

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC will hold two listening sessions on Oct 28 and Oct 29 — one in-person in Dover at 1 p.m. and one virtual at 6 p.m. — to collect public input on a ten-year wildlife conservation plan that will guide efforts through 2035.  Deleware State Government

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and national leaders met at Delaware State University’s Dover campus earlier this week to review new research and discuss strategies to reduce community violence. Executive Director Lauren Footman highlighted improvements in Laurel—where no homicides or shootings have been reported—and said officials plan to expand the intervention program to Sussex County soon.  WHYY
  • Delaware officials and disability advocates launched the Blue Envelope Program to help drivers with disabilities communicate with police during traffic stops — the blue envelope holds a driver’s license, registration and emergency instructions and is available at State Police Troops and local agencies. The program will also offer a 30-minute practice traffic stop on Oct. 23 at Cape Henlopen State Park to prepare participants for real encounters.  Delaware Online
  • The Delaware Department of Insurance and its Medicare Assistance Bureau said free one-on-one counseling saved Delawareans $2.2M last year. From today until December 7, residents can join, switch, or drop Medicare plans by scheduling phone, virtual, or in-person appointments — the Bureau warned against scammers amid rising marketing calls.  Deleware State Government

  • Natalie Belcher from Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition appeared on Good Morning Delaware to stress early detection, education, and support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. DBCC leads programs that offer life-saving screenings and financial help to breast cancer survivors.  DETV

  • Delaware will face Jacksonville State today at AmFirst Stadium at 7 p.m. on ESPN — the Blue Hens are favored by 2½ after a narrow loss and fans can join a watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings in Newark.  Delaware Online
