- ➤ Wilmington's West Side now has Rodney Reservoir Park — a repurposed reservoir taken out of service decades ago that now offers 300 trees, trails, native plants and a community garden set to open in spring. WDEL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Newark City Council is weighing plans to raise water, sewage, and electric rates along with property taxes to cover a nearly $7 million shortfall in its 2026 budget—some council members support the increases while differences persist as a budget hearing will occur on November 3. - ➤ Officials at the Delaware Department of Correction said that rising maintenance costs for the nearly 125-year-old Plummer Community Corrections Center have led to a decision to close the facility next March—residents and staff will move to other sites in Georgetown and Smyrna while employees receive reassigned roles. - ➤ Yesterday, Governor Matt Meyer signed ceremonial copies of three bills that strengthen public safety and support law enforcement. One bill offers up to $3,000 per year for the care of retired police horses—another renames the State Police Training Academy after Colonel James L. Ford, Jr.—and the third makes it a felony to discharge a firearm at homes, businesses, vehicles, or places of worship. Deleware State Government
- ➤ A new Delaware law that limits prolonged dog barking took effect on Oct. 9th. Gov. John Carney signed the measure last year—its rules define excessive barking as 15 minutes continuously or 30 minutes intermittently and include exemptions for dogs in shelters, pet stores, grooming facilities, training, or lawful competitions with increasing fines for repeat offenses. - ➤ Wilmington mom Sarah Neyers sought help for her 9-year-old son Gavin, who has autism, but he was denied Medicaid coverage for needed therapies because he does not meet the severe disability criteria — she appealed the decision in September and expects a ruling within 90 days. Spotlight Delaware

- ➤ Walt's Chicken, one of Wilmington's oldest Black-owned restaurants, will celebrate 50 years with a party on Oct. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at its Miller Road site—there will be live music, hors d’oeuvres and signature crispy fried chicken offered at 50% off for walk-in customers. Delaware Online

- ➤ Banana Ball will debut in Wilmington next August as Delaware hosts the sport for the first time—local fans will enjoy an event different from the Savannah Bananas World Tour. The Bananas will not play at Delaware's major ballparks, with their closest games scheduled at Frawley Stadium in August and at Yankee Stadium in April. WDEL
- ➤ Delaware State University expects to break its homecoming win drought on Oct. 11 when Southern Connecticut State visits at noon, aiming to end a two-game losing streak and build momentum for MEAC play—while celebrating a 40-year reunion with the 1985 MEAC champions. Delaware Online
