ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Delaware is set to invest $10 million from its Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund to help sports organizations improve facilities and attract visitors from out-of-state. The Delaware Tourism Office will host an informational webinar on November 6 at 11 a.m.—applications open from November 12 until December 12 with awards expected in March. WDEL
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Delaware State University reported record enrollment on October 8 with over 6,600 students—the largest in its 134-year history. The increase is driven by INSPIRE scholars and Early College School graduates who helped boost applications and support growth. WITN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Matt Meyer launched an online resource website on October 8th to help federal employees and residents impacted by the shutdown by offering links for food, healthcare, unemployment, and mental health support — the page will be updated with more programs as they become available. WITN
- ➤ New Castle County is facing a lawsuit that alleges misclassifications for over 4,200 properties have led to more than 1,300 incorrect tax bills and a hearing is set for Oct. 20 with a decision expected by Oct. 31—this case questions if the split property tax rates meet the state constitution's rule on uniform taxation. - ➤ Delaware Department of Labor Secretary LaKresha Moultrie announced yesterday that Christina Feil, a disability advocate with over 20 years of experience as a deaf interpreter and job coach, will lead the Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The move will expand support for deaf and hard-of-hearing workers in our community. Deleware State Government
- ➤ On October 7, 2025, the Wilmington Fire Department held a demonstration at Station 3 on 30th Street and Northeast Boulevard using a small, half-story fire safety inflatable to show children and adults how to stay calm during a fire—community groups and schools can request future demonstrations. - ➤ Delaware and ChristianaCare reached an agreement on October 8 that paused litigation over House Bill 350 and set a path toward settlement. ChristianaCare agreed to submit employee claims data for transparency and will negotiate a healthcare workforce loan forgiveness investment this fall. WDEL
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A skunk near Delaware Park Boulevard tested positive for rabies and Delaware Public Health warned residents to avoid contact with wild animals (raccoons, foxes, feral cats) and keep their pets indoors. WDEL
- ➤ Bayhealth announced it will seek a nearly $250 million expansion at its Dover hospital to add almost 100 new beds and update old facilities—public approvals from Dover city officials are still pending. The hospital plans to add new floors to its emergency department and extra inpatient spaces to prepare for a sicker, aging population. Spotlight Delaware
