COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Delaware Online launched an interactive map that helps Wilmington residents locate support services like food, housing, and mental health assistance. The tool is in early stages and currently lists only Wilmington organizations—future updates will add services from other counties.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trailblazing journalist Juan González will speak at DelTech in Georgetown on October 15 at 6:00 p.m.—and at Delaware History Museum on October 16 at 6:00 p.m. as part of Delaware 250 celebrations, where he will discuss Latino contributions; both events are free and open to the public.  Delaware Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Delmarva Power and Chesapeake Utilities explained that rising wholesale natural gas prices will lead to higher bills starting Nov. 1; gas-only customers may see payments increase from about $85 to $96 while electric-only customers remain largely unchanged. Both companies offer winter bill relief programs — including a customer relief fund and a grant program for eligible households — while the Delaware Public Advocate reviews the proposals to ensure fairness.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Odyssey Charter School opened its Immersion School—its first dedicated Greek language program outside of Greece—on September 18; officials said the program will see rapid growth.  Delaware Online
  • Two University of Delaware doctoral students have been awarded NASA FINESST funds to study the ocean and the night sky. Yuleny Gomez Rodriguez will use optical tools to track marine life movements while Siddarth Chaini employs machine learning on light curves to spot star changes—paving the way for new discoveries.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC has set a daily recreational possession limit of 50 spot fish in Delaware to comply with the ASMFC management plan that aims to restore sustainable fish stocks—licensed guides and vessels have exceptions allowing them to carry more than the daily limit.  Deleware State Government

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Meyer created a new task force led by Transportation Secretary Shanté Hastings to review the state’s Transportation Trust Fund and find new funding sources—meeting this month and set to report recommendations in December 2026.  Delaware Public Media
  • On Oct.6, Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings announced that the federal Department of Justice dropped a plan to impose illegal conditions on nearly $1.4 billion in Victims of Crime Act grants — a decision that should streamline funds for crime victims.  Bay to Bay News
  • A special bipartisan legislative committee held its second hearing on last year’s property reassessment on October 7—county officials explained that new digital records and fair tax values have restored trust. The committee will hold another hearing on October 21 while the Court of Chancery will consider a related lawsuit on October 20.  WDEL
  • SEPTA is inspecting 225 Silverliner IV railcars after several fires prompted a federal order, which has shortened trains and delayed riders. The agency reported 55 canceled trains on the first day and 12 on the second day—these modifications will include new thermal monitors and take about a month.  WHYY
