COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept. 26, Salesianum beat Sussex Central 31-7 in a football game at Abessinio Stadium while Cape Henlopen won 3-0 against Tower Hill in field hockey at Richardson Field on Sept. 20. Earlier on Aug. 14, a People’s Festival celebrating Bob Marley's legacy took place at the Delaware Art Museum with live music by Spokey Speaky—DJ Jb provided music at the event hosted by Chandra Pitts.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • The director of Sean’s House held a ribbon cutting for its new space—The Garage—and marked five years of its work today. The event celebrated an important milestone in the organization’s ongoing community mission.  Delaware Online
  • On October 5th, Wilmington City Council staff hosted the Black Food Festival—part of Black Restaurant Week—to boost local restaurant business by offering free tastings from several chefs.  6abc
  • On Saturday, Oct. 11, Wilmington International Film Festival will debut Caribbean Film and Fashion Night in downtown Wilmington, hosted by the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce of the Northeast. The event will feature film screenings with Spragga Benz, Oliver Samuels, and Nadine Sutherland—along with a runway show from New York Fashion Week designers and free live Caribbean music at The Chancery from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware Gov Meyer and the Department of Education unlocked $7.2 million in grants for early reading that public and charter schools will use with high-quality materials and coaching by Oct. 13—while Delaware State University secured $2 million for an online HBCU consortium, Saint Mark’s High School received a $1.25 million donation for athletic upgrades and Saint Edmond’s Academy began the year with major campus renovations.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council rejected an ordinance to clarify rules for referendums that let residents vote on policy changes—local councilwoman Shané Darby warned that unclear procedures might cause chaos in future votes. Four council members challenged the costs and fairness of signature collection as the measure was defeated by a vote of 4 to 7.  Spotlight Delaware

  • ChristianaCare officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 30 for their upcoming Health Center at Middletown and said the new facility will boost local healthcare services.  Bay to Bay News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Castle County has been identified as having two of the ugliest public buildings in America by the New Jersey Real Estate Network after a survey of 3,003 people ranked 100 buildings; the county’s No. 20 Public Works Building — No. 35 Government Center were named among the worst.  Delaware Online
