CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hagley Museum & Library, located at 200 Hagley Creek Road, showcases American industrial history on 235 acres along the Brandywine Creek with exhibits featuring hundreds of patents and a hands-on DuPont Discovery Loft for children + families can also explore trails that pass black powder ruins and the duPont mansion and gardens, and the museum is open every day except Wednesdays.  6abc
  • Delaware rapper Amillion The Poet toured Africa—installing water systems in Togo and supporting orphanages, a sports academy and local villages; he plans a future tour to Ghana and continues to serve Dover with his annual 1NA Day.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Portuguese man o' wars were found on Delaware beaches on Oct.2 when two were spotted at Bethany Beach and Delaware Seashore State Park. Experts say these colonial siphonophores—known for their strong stings—were pushed in by recent hurricanes and wind patterns.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware and New Jersey lost nearly $43.5 million in clean energy funding when the DOE cut projects, including a research study at Delaware State University + work at the University of Delaware and Rutgers. The DOE said the projects were not economically viable, and award recipients have 30 days to appeal the cancellations.  WHYY
  • Delawareans face economic uncertainty as the government shutdown threatens to end SNAP and WIC by November, with Congresswoman Sarah McBride and the Food Bank of Delaware warning that missed paychecks and cancelled food shipments have hurt families. Delmarva Power said it will offer flexible payment options and assistance to help customers manage bills—supporting those hit by rising costs and delayed federal services.  WDEL
  • Gov. Matt Meyer denied claims that he delayed property reassessment data until after the 2024 election—documents show that the release timeline was set as early as December 2023 and scheduled for November.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Wilmington’s Bancroft Mills Bridge is near reopening after four years of repairs from damage by Hurricane Ida’s record flood, with FEMA funds used to raise the bridge 15 feet above the flood level and reconnect Alapocas Run State Park with Rockford Park—construction on a small picnic area continues while public parking remains limited.  WDEL
  • Sen. Darius Brown announced nearly $3.5 million was allocated to seven Delaware banking organizations through the Community Investment Venture Fund—created to boost access to capital in low- and moderate-income areas and drive economic growth.  WDEL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware can now enroll in the new Medicare GUIDE program that pays local care agencies to offer free dementia respite services, training, and care coordination—this program helps ease caregiver stress. The program offers personalized care plans with a dedicated coordinator and enrollment is rolling through eight years of funding until 2032.  WHYY
  • ChristianaCare doubled its revenue in the last decade but kept charity care spending nearly flat at less than 1% of its expenses. The hospital’s CFO said the Board of Directors sets free care thresholds while future federal funding cuts and rising costs may affect help for patients—raising concerns over medical debt.  Spotlight Delaware
