  • Wilmington’s Bancroft Mills Bridge reopened today after nearly four years of closure from record flooding during Hurricane Ida—its new design raises the span 20 feet to achieve a 15-foot clearance above the 100-year flood level while nearby construction of a picnic area continues.  WDEL
  • Photos of the week capture key events in Delaware from Sept.26 to Sept.30—images show Dover’s special property reassessment meeting discussing Tyler Technologies, a Wilmington Fire Department response to a house fire on Lakeview, a Middletown High School marching band performance at Cavalier Stadium, local high school sports at Saint Mark’s, and a couple reconnecting after 65 years who will marry this weekend.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Attorney General Kathy Jennings, the FTC, and 19 states have acted to stop a deceptive charity scheme by Kars-R-Us.com that raised over $45 million—only a tiny part went to breast cancer screenings while operators Michael Irwin and Lisa Frank now face bans and strict restrictions on future fundraising.  Deleware State Government

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Delmarva Power and Chesapeake Utilities filed applications to raise their gas cost and sales service rates by about 43% and 30%, which could raise monthly bills by roughly $11 and $17 for 140,000 and 77,000 customers respectively if approved. Delaware Public Advocate said his office will review the filings closely—ensuring the rate hikes, planned to take effect on November 1st, are fair.  Deleware State Government

  • University of Delaware student Heaven Boisclair studied survivor stories at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to see if hard childhood events affect how people feel later (she used her brain science background) and her work will add to research on these long-term effects (a growing field of study).  University of Delaware

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware state parks officials unveiled a plan Tuesday to raise entry fees and pass prices to help cover higher operating costs—entry fees for Delaware vehicles will increase by $1 and the lifetime pass for seniors will more than double. Officials will collect public input at open houses with a final meeting scheduled for tonight at Killens Pond Nature Center.  Spotlight Delaware
  • On Sept. 30, the Wilmington Task Force on Homelessness sent Mayor Carney recommendations to expand services for people without homes — the plan calls for more affordable housing, a day center and temporary shelter in city parks while it is warm. The report also suggests a modular home village near Christina Park in partnership with Springboard Delaware and urges the city to secure funding from state taxes.  Delaware Public Media
  • Officials reported work progressed on Wilmington's $100 million Riverfront sequel project—restarted on October 2nd—to transform the barren area directly across the Christina River.  Delaware Online

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Pennsylvania has approved a new $25 million clinic in Concord Plaza, Talleyville to offer radiology and primary care services. The 7,865-square-foot facility—set to open in late 2027—will be Penn Medicine’s first standalone project in Delaware.  Delaware Online
  • On October 1, Senior Roll Call reached a 74-year-old woman at her New Castle apartment after she fell and was disoriented for about an hour—EMS and her building's maintenance responded, and she is now in stable condition in a local hospital.  New Castle County Police Department
  • The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition in Wilmington began Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sharing the case of Lissette Rivera—who helped a young woman detect a lump that led to a timely diagnosis—and urging residents to get screened. Tomorrow, more than 5,000 residents will join Dewey Goes Pink 5K—an annual event—to support access to breast cancer education, screenings, and survivor programs.  Delaware LIVE
  • The Delaware Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act took effect on Sept. 30, giving families, doctors and patients clear rules for making treatment choices when someone cannot speak for themselves—this law replaces old standards with new rules that widen who can serve as a health-care agent and require detailed advance directives.  Delaware LIVE

  • Friends' Cooper Strauss leads Delaware high school football scoring by scoring 68 points in four games for his 2-2 team—placing him ahead of top rivals from Indian River, Smyrna and Charter of Wilmington as his team prepares to host Archmere this week.  WDEL
