COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Photos from Newark captured local highlights in August 2025—showing the University of Delaware campus, the busy Grove shopping center, and Main Street scenes along with Newark Charter’s first varsity football win and a move-in weekend for over 4,600 new students.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania K-12 teachers can register online by Nov. 29 to receive free annual passes to Sesame Place Philadelphia. The passes give unlimited admission for the rest of 2025 and all of 2026 along with special events—providing a valuable break for educators.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delaware State Parks offers fall programs that let families enjoy outdoor activities such as scenic tours, nature hikes, arts events, and history tours. Cape Henlopen State Park hosts a Children’s Fantasy Trail from Oct. 24—26—staff dress as storybook characters and some special events require online registration at least 24 hours in advance.  Deleware State Government

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware state parks leaders are considering raising entrance, annual, and lifetime pass fees to cover rising operating costs and user-funded expenses. The public can share input at open houses on Sept. 30, Oct. 1, and Oct. 2 in Wilmington, Lewes, and Felton — an online survey will also gather feedback.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Cristen Linke Young was nominated on Tuesday to serve as Delaware’s Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Services and will need confirmation by the state Senate. She will start her role on Oct. 1 after her predecessor, Josette Manning, moves to work in Sen. Chris Coons’ office.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Governor Matt Meyer and several New Castle County colleagues won a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award on September 20 for the documentary Restless Ground: The Untold Story of Mt. Olive—detailing the history of Mt. Olive Cemetery and its impact on local justice efforts. Further projects by county partners have also received national recognition.  Deleware State Government
  • Governor Matt Meyer nominated eight experts to join the Delaware Nuclear Energy Feasibility Task Force today—studying if small modular reactors can provide reliable, clean power. The 25-member team will examine technical, economic and environmental impacts—and will report to the General Assembly by December 31.  Deleware State Government
  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed a law that stops the removal of books from school libraries—forcing school boards to review any objections and keep challenged books on shelves until a decision is made. Rep. Krista Griffith helped push the bill and a new statewide committee will review all complaints before any book is taken off the shelf.  WHYY
  • New Castle County landlords are suing over a new school tax law that splits rates between commercial and residential properties—claiming the change will cause irreparable harm until a judge rules. The county has delayed sending new tax bills and a hearing was held Tuesday with a decision expected by Oct.30, leaving property owners in limbo.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • It is Child Passenger Safety Week and local officers provide free car seat installations and safety inspections through a partnership with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety—families can get help to ensure proper harness position and fit for every ride.  New Castle County Police Department

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Experts say that if mortgage rates drop, more people could buy homes this fall even though homes now take longer to sell and prices have fallen from June to August. Realtors note that sales dipped in July and out-of-state buyers are drawn by Delaware's low taxes and coastal lifestyle.  Delaware Online
