BUSINESS NEWS

  • Toyota, Hyundai, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, BMW, and Polestar are recalling over 500,000 vehicles due to issues with instrument panels, seat belts, door trim, and other safety systems. Owner letters will be mailed from late September through November — local dealerships will perform the free repairs and updates.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Law enforcement is investigating the finances of the Police Athletic League of Delaware after former executive Valerie Longhurst resigned last month and questions arose over millions in taxpayer funds including federal COVID relief money—an inquiry involving the New Castle County Police and the Attorney General's office.  Spotlight Delaware

CULTURE NEWS

  • Delaware has a proud history of inventions such as scrapple, Teflon and NASA space suits made by ILC Dover—items that have transformed everyday life and boosted high-tech work. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Delaware’s gross domestic product grew by an average of 1.7% a year between 1997 and 2024, which is one-third lower than the national rate of 2.4%, state officials said last week.  Bay to Bay News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Walnut Street YMCA will celebrate its 85th anniversary on October 24 by honoring five local leaders with Lifetime Achievement Awards at Chase Center on the Riverfront. Red Clay Consolidated School District has secured part of a $24 million opioid recovery fund grant while the Delaware Valor Classic will hold a golf event on Sept 29 to support military youth—Children of Valor will receive the proceeds.  Delaware Online
  • Wilmington's Redding Consortium is asking community members to join a listening session at Warner Elementary School—Saturday, September 27—to share views on redistricting proposals that may change school boundaries in the city.   • University of Delaware officials are urging students to take the Hazing Prevention Pledge during National Hazing Prevention Week to stop harmful hazing practices on campus. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Department of Agriculture announced Monday that inspectors discovered the federally regulated Box Tree Moth during trap checks at the New Castle County border with Kent County. Homeowners and nurseries with boxwoods are advised to check for signs of damage, as caterpillar infestations can defoliate shrubs — officials are monitoring the pest in collaboration with the USDA and University of Delaware extension.  WDEL
  • UD researchers led by Professor Dongxia Liu developed a new mesoporous MXene catalyst that turned plastic waste into liquid fuels nearly twice as fast as older methods—pilot tests showed the catalyst produced quality fuel with fewer unwanted byproducts. The team plans to refine the catalyst and expand its use with other plastics for more efficient upcycling.  University of Delaware
