CULTURE NEWS

  • Archived News Journal articles show that on Sept. 15th, 1925, officer Ralph Purnell mistakenly shot well-known newspaper dealer Eugene Vernon while a barking dog and a sudden light caused a mix-up—his misidentification led to the error. In 1975, during a teachers' strike marked by low attendance and multiple arrests, city officials threatened to fire secretaries, and in 2000 Conectiv settled billing complaints by agreeing to pay $2.5 million.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware Public Archives launched a digital exhibit titled Old School: Rediscovering Classrooms of the Past on September 12—showcasing the history of school buildings once found across the state.  Deleware State Government
  • Newark Union Church in Brandywine Hundred, built in 1845, reopened in May as a museum after 50 years of closure thanks to grants and donations—its adjacent cemetery, established in 1687 and holding over 1,000 graves including 88 veterans, was placed on the National Register in 2020. Volunteer board members continue to care for the historic site.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five UD Fulbright scholars have been chosen to teach, research, and inspire abroad, with Alex Dwornikowski (a UD alumnus from Kazakhstan) starting a 10-month English teaching assistantship while others will work in Brazil, Malta, Colombia, and the Netherlands (joining new cultures). The Fulbright program uses academic exchange to build cultural bridges.  University of Delaware
  • The University of Delaware shared updates on recent faculty and alumni activities including a Rousseau exhibition catalog that runs from Oct. 19 to Feb. 22—professor Limin Kung Jr. earned an international research award, Peter P. McLaughlin Jr. was named director of the Delaware Geological Survey effective Aug. 1, and the community mourned the recent deaths of professors George Basalla and Peter M.   • UD junior Jackson Whitcomb presented his summer research on Aug. 13 with design ideas to improve Riverview Cemetery—a 153-year-old burial ground on North Market Street in Wilmington. His proposals for new trees, walking trails and respectful changes aim to preserve this historic urban green space.  University of Delaware
  • Delaware is investing $8 million to boost early literacy in schools as test scores remain low, with funds for reading coaches, classroom materials — and teacher grants aimed at helping prekindergarten through third grade students. Education Secretary Cindy Marten said the money will go to schools with the most struggling readers.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer is issuing a Standing Order with the Division of Public Health to ensure all Delawareans six months and older can get COVID-19 vaccines easily. The order directs the Board of Pharmacy and Department of Education to adjust state rules as federal changes occur—Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro said insurers will keep vaccine coverage while Senator Blunt Rochester noted calls from those denied shots.  WDEL
  • On Sept 9, the Delaware State Housing Authority announced preliminary awards in the low-income housing tax credit cycle—four development projects received allocations toward affordable housing. Officials said final decisions will come soon—more details will be shared as the review process continues.  Bay to Bay News
  • Governor Matt Meyer proclaimed an extraordinary session of the Senate — it will begin at 3:00 p.m. on September 22 to conduct executive business.  Deleware State Government
  • Wilmington Airport announced it will raise daily parking rates in main lots A, B and C from $9.50 to $11.50 effective Nov. 1—this change will fund airport improvements and help the facility remain competitive with regional options. Overflow Lot D remains at $8 per day.  Delaware Online

  • Data from Zumper showed that Wilmington apartment rental prices remained around $1,748 from last month—one-bedroom and two-bedroom units saw little change from previous figures.  Delaware Online
