COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UD's Goodstay Gardens — located off Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington — is open to the public free year-round.  Delaware Online
  • Over the years, the Wilmington Riverfront has been upgraded with new features and events that have boosted its role as a local gathering spot — festive displays and public festivals have drawn residents and visitors alike.  Delaware Online
  • Autumn in Wilmington offers a range of local events for families and friends. Alapocas Run State Park will hold a rock climbing class for Girl Scouts, Rockwood Park will host an interactive mystery event called Mayhem and Murder at Rockwood, New Castle County will operate farmers markets in Bellevue, Middletown, Carousel Park and New Castle, and the Brandywine Zoo will celebrate wallabies on Sunday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.+ each event provides a distinct way to enjoy the fall season.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilmington will host the second annual Cityfest Dance Jubilee from Sept.18—20 at the Tina Betz Urban Artist Exchange where the free festival will feature dance workshops and performances for all ages with a special appearance by Urban Bush Women.  Delaware LIVE
  • The Urban Artist Exchange Outdoor Amphitheater in Wilmington received a Delaware Design Award from the American Institute of Architects after it transformed an old police horse stable into a creative arts campus. Director Tina Betz and the project team will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony later this month — a nod to the community’s vibrant arts scene.  Delaware LIVE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Initial unemployment benefit filings in Delaware dropped to 259 for the week ending Sept. 6 — down from 267 the week before, the U.S. Labor Department reported.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gemelle John runs Horizons Tower Hill, a free six-week program that gives extra lessons and fun field trips to Wilmington students—aimed at closing the education gap. The program started in summer 2023 and now serves nearly 40 rising students—while it plans to add a new school partner in the fall.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington’s homelessness task force will hold a public comment meeting on Monday, September 15 at 10 a.m. at the Community Service Building to review its recommendations, which include a plan for a temporary tiny home village in Christina Park and proposals for extra day centers, storage, and affordable housing — state tax revenue is being considered as a funding source.  Spotlight Delaware
  • The Delaware Department of Labor’s Office of Construction Enforcement and its partners will host National Construction Week events—running from September 15 to 19—that focus on workforce opportunities, safety and construction education. The events will kick off on Monday, September 15 at the Route 9 Library.  Deleware State Government
  • On September 11th, the Delaware Tourism Office opened applications for the TEAMS program—designed to fund and expand both new and existing sporting events—to boost sports tourism and local economic growth in Delaware.  Deleware State Government
  • Delaware’s Office of the Marijuana Commissioner announced today the launch of the Social Equity Financial Assistance (SEFA) Grant Program to provide milestone-based funding that supports approved social equity licensees with essential business needs such as facility build-out and equipment acquisition. Funding will be distributed in phases as licensees meet operational milestones and a webinar will help guide applicants through the process.  Deleware State Government

SPORTS NEWS

  • Photos from September 5—10 showed Delaware high school sports events including football, volleyball and field hockey with key moments captured at games; the images featured action and celebrations from teams like Delaware Military Academy. These photos provided a close look at competitive plays and memorable athletic moments.  Delaware Online
  • Middletown High School did not pay its fine or send a plan by Aug. 30, so at a Sept. 11 board meeting the DIAA increased the fine by $200 per day (making it $2600 so far). The board warned that if the school does not submit the plan by Sept. 13, its probation will change to a restrictive one that could bar the school from state championships.  Delaware Online
