BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco will open several new warehouses this fall including a store in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania scheduled for October while its long-standing store in Christiana remains unchanged.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Emergency crews were dispatched to Fox Point State Park (at 7:30 a.m.) on Thursday after reports of a body in the Delaware River led responders to confirm the discovery and recover the body (with assistance from marine units), while the investigation remains open.  First State Update

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Odessa Brewfest returns this Saturday, September 6, with craft beers, live music, food, vendors and a Fusion Beer Mile race for up to 100 runners—VIP ticket holders will have early access at 12 p.m.—while the event remains adults-only.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Delaware senior April Kwon combined her love of playing the viola with neuroscience research as she spent the summer studying how musical training changes brain activity under the guidance of neuroscientist Stuart McCaughey. Her work explored the role of the corpus callosum— a key structure that links the brain's two halves.  University of Delaware
  • The Wilmington Learning Collaborative reported that Bayard School’s iReady math scores rose from 1% to 9% and Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy’s iReady reading scores increased from 7% to 17%, showing clear gains in testing. The group also noted strong overall attendance at Bayard—83%—and is working with families of early grades while partnering with United Way and the Boys and Girls Club for enrichment programs ahead of its October 1 meeting at DSU Riverfront Building.  Delaware Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Governor Matt Meyer signed a series of bipartisan housing bills that expand affordable home access and strengthen protections for renters and homeowners, including a new affordable rental housing program and improved rules for manufactured home communities — the legislation also lets Sussex County impose fees to fund school construction.  Deleware State Government
  • A Delaware judge ruled last week that stricter gun laws—requiring adult supervision for hunters under 21 and raising the age to purchase firearms—violate the state constitution. The Kent County Superior Court issued its decision on Aug 29th, and the new rules never took effect when hunting season began on Sept 1st.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Council member Shane Darby led a town hall on Sept. 3 at the Police Athletic League where residents and contractors discussed changes to the Wilmington Land Bank such as lower vacancy fees and special financing for low-income buyers to improve transparency; her proposal will be reviewed by a committee this fall.  Delaware Online
