CRIME NEWS

  • Federal judge Colm F. Connolly sentenced convicted drug trafficker Dwayne Fountain to 25 years in federal prison after he was found guilty of mixing deadly opioids with cocaine and other drugs—authorities say his scheme built a dangerous drug network in Delaware.  WHYY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sussex County-based Nanticoke Tribe overcame a $30,000 funding shortfall with community donations—over 130 members raised more than $16,500 in 11 days—to support their 47th annual powwow set for Sept. 6-7 at Hudson Fields in Milton. The tribe broke ground on a new community center on Aug. 25—part of a $3 million capital campaign meant to boost cultural programs and prepare for future museum renovations.  Spotlight Delaware

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Emerging Delaware and Wilmington University will launch cloud education pathways on October 27 to help students earn certificates, degrees, and short courses for cloud and AI jobs — the program allows credentials to count toward further college education or immediate work. Emerging Delaware will design the courses and support employer outreach as Wilmington University will share more details on how to apply soon.  Delaware Public Media
  • Today, Governor Matt Meyer signed nine bills to boost schools by offering free breakfast for all students starting next school year—changes that also include new background checks for school board members, updated teacher evaluation rules, and options for remote participation in board meetings.  Deleware State Government
  • Today, the Delaware School Safety Center is providing resources to help families and schools with safety measures for the 2025-26 school year—its tools include the Safe DE anonymous reporting system for confidential alerts. Director Joey Melvin said the center works with schools to review communication, safe routes, and emergency procedures.  WDEL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware State Fire Commission thanked Governor Matt Meyer on Wednesday, September 3 for proclaiming September as National Service Dog Awareness Month—an effort to recognize how service dogs assist people with disabilities and help fire and EMS personnel manage stress. The proclamation highlighted that these trained dogs serve as trusted partners in daily life and support mental health for first responders.  Deleware State Government
  • The Delaware Superior Court overturned a law that required buyers to be 21 to purchase a firearm, ruling it violates constitutional rights and restricts 18-to-21-year-olds from self-defense—DSSA brought the challenge against the 2022 change which raised the age from 18. DNREC will update the hunting guide to let those aged 18 hunt without adult supervision as a result of the ruling.  Delaware Public Media

  • University of Delaware football moves to the FBS level and will travel to Colorado this Saturday for its first FBS versus FBS game. Coach Deion Sanders praised UD quarterback Nick Minicucci’s strong bench performance—Fox will air the game at 3:30 p.m.  Delaware Public Media
