  • Members of organizations and businesses honored as among Delaware's Top Workplaces gathered at the Chase Center on the Riverfront on August 20 for an awards ceremony — the 19th edition organized by Delaware Online/The News Journal — where winners in multiple categories were recognized.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • New Castle County Police said a welfare check turned into a murder investigation on August 14 after officers searched a vacant house on Balfour Avenue where they found 53-year-old Clifton Bailey dead from a gunshot wound—state autopsy confirmed the death as homicide and police ask anyone with information to contact Detective Elwood.  WDEL

FINANCE NEWS

  • Carriers on the Delaware Health Insurance Marketplace filed higher 2026 rates due to federal budget changes + expiration of enhanced Advanced Premium Tax Credits; AmeriHealth Caritas, Celtic Ambetter Health, and Highmark saw increases of about 25% to nearly 35%. Commissioner Trinidad Navarro said the state will work to lower rates if Congress extends the credits, noting that enrollment may decline when the credits end.  Deleware State Government

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Five New Castle County school districts approved split property tax rates this week to lower homeowners' bills and raise rates for commercial properties. Recalculated tax bills will be mailed by Sept 30 & homeowners may request refunds for differences over $50, with amounts under $50 credited toward next year.  Spotlight Delaware
  • On August 21, Delaware State Auditor Lydia York released a report showing that the Congo Legacy Center did not properly spend or document nearly half of its opioid abatement grant. The center made payments to companies linked to its founder—raising concerns as Congo argues the funds were used for renovations.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Delaware leaders and family members remembered former governor Mike Castle during a memorial service held Friday at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Greenville—former Senator Tom Carper and relatives praised his fairness, authenticity, and commitment to public service. Top state officials and national figures attended the service to honor Castle’s lifelong dedication to doing what was right.  Delaware Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Panelists at Wilmington Public Library said that state officials did not act fast enough to address dangerous lead in school water and older housing. Attendees from the NAACP, teacher’s union and Christina School District pointed to past testing delays and missing spending details—raising concerns that many children remain at risk.  WHYY
