BUSINESS NEWS

  • Claire's filed for bankruptcy on Aug. 6 due to pandemic challenges and rising competition, and the chain has begun going-out-of-business sales. The company will close 18 stores by Sept. 7 and may liquidate its 1,500 North American locations, including five in Delaware, if no buyer is found.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington Police investigated a shooting on August 18 at around 5:58 p.m. on Vandever Avenue when officers found a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound and took him to a nearby hospital in stable condition—detectives are still gathering details.  First State Update
  • On August 15, detectives arrested 24-year-old Dayvon Malice at Christiana Mall after his white Chevrolet Camaro, which fled from officers in the Oakmont neighborhood on August 7, was stopped and he was found with a loaded, concealed handgun & now faces several charges.  New Castle County Police Department

CULTURE NEWS

  • Delawareans can add stitches to a 1,600 square inch panel—part of America’s Tapestry Project celebrating America’s 250th—that shows the Revolutionary story of Major Henry Fisher guarding a river route. Organizers invite the public to join at the Biggs Museum in Dover on August 23 at 11 a.m. and will tour the project statewide before next April.  Delaware Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • ChristianaCare researchers found that women in Riverside and Middletown face higher risks for advanced breast cancer due to low screening rates and aggressive tumor types—an analysis of 3,492 patient records will guide future local efforts to improve screening access. The study is prompting targeted community health actions in the affected areas.  WHYY
