  • August ends summer with a series of local festivals that offer films, food, comedy and cultural events. Wilmington will host the Dirty Popcorn Black Film Festival on Aug. 9–10 while towns like Clayton, Whitehall, Dover, Selbyville, Harrington, Milford, Middletown, Dewey Beach and Arden present events through Aug. 30.  Delaware Online

  • On August 1, hundreds of Delawareans visited 12 dispensaries for the state's first recreational marijuana sales, expecting the new market to create jobs and generate $280 million in taxes—some critics argued the launch favored established medical dispensaries over new start-ups.  Spotlight Delaware

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 2nd, 2008, at around 10:00 p.m. police responded to 41 S. Cannon Drive in Edgemoor to find 19-year-old Nelson Drakeford with multiple gunshot wounds—he died shortly after arriving at the hospital and the cold case remains under investigation.  New Castle County Police Department

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Delaware Division of the Arts’ Mezzanine Gallery (at the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street) is showing Divine Nature, a solo exhibition by local artist Shilpi that opened on August 1 with a free opening reception (5:00 to 7:00 p.m.) and will remain open until August 29.  Deleware State Government

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delaware’s fall season begins with the autumnal equinox on Sept 22 at 2:19 p.m., and leaves will remain green until around Sept 30 before showing color changes. Peak hues are expected to start in Hockessin around Oct 29—spreading to New Castle County by Nov 1—and reach full display by mid-November.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislative leaders say a special session on property tax reassessment and increased school taxes will begin Tuesday, August 12 — with proposals to ease financial strain on New Castle County residents. They will discuss options like interest-free payment plans and cash refunds to help balance the school tax burden.  WDEL
  • Delaware law requires drivers to pull over, provide identification, and stay in the vehicle when stopped by police—officers must show their badge and state the reason for the stop. Drivers can contest a ticket in court and report any inappropriate behavior to the relevant agency.  Delaware Online
