CULTURE NEWS

  • Photos of Delaware’s nature and wildlife were honored at the state fair after DNREC chose winners from its 2025 contest. Winners got $500 gift cards, state park passes and merchandise—entries were grouped into categories like landscapes, wildlife and youth.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rev. J. Christian Beretta, who has served as principal since 2010, will step down from Salesianum School at the end of the 2025—2026 school year as a nationwide search for his replacement gets underway. A new principal is set to start on July 1, 2026.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents at a town hall meeting at the Delaware City Fire Hall raised concerns about a proposed 6.1 million square foot data center by Starwood Digital Ventures, questioning potential increases in energy and water bills and the commitment to local labor. Local officials noted that while the project is expected to create over 200 new jobs, key details remain unclear as county council reviews the proposal — and further discussions are planned.  Delaware Public Media
  • New Castle County Council approved an ordinance on Tuesday that raised the police retirement age from 55 to 57 to help address recruitment declines and officer shortages—this change is expected to increase future salary costs as the department adjusts its retirement plans.  Delaware Public Media
  • On Thursday, July 24, Councilman Kevin Caneco said a crowded meeting at Delaware City Fire Hall featured a presentation by Starwood Digital Ventures on a proposed data center near the refinery. Caneco expressed deep concerns about the plan's unclear power and water needs and noted that more public meetings—set for the next 12 to 18 months—will rigorously review the project.  WDEL

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study from ChristianaCare shows that Wilmington and Middletown have higher rates of advanced breast cancer, with Wilmington impacted by low screening rates and aggressive tumor types while Middletown has other factors at play. ChristianaCare has already placed a community health worker in Wilmington to boost screenings—researchers plan to expand this targeted approach as they investigate additional causes.  Delaware LIVE
