BUSINESS NEWS

  • DSB unveiled EDGE 2.0 in Dover to offer $1.15M in grant funding for small businesses through revamped Entrepreneur and STEM tracks—applications will open on Aug.8 and run until Sept.4 with a webinar on Aug.6 at 10 a.m. to guide applicants.  Deleware State Government
  • U.S. News and World Report made a list of the best companies to work for and two Delaware companies, Marvell in Wilmington and Sallie Mae in Newark, both earned high marks for pay, job stability, and work-life balance. The report used several factors to rate these firms—showing they offer strong employee benefits.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, July 22 at approximately 3:58 p.m., officers responded to a shooting on Wilton Boulevard and Stonebridge Boulevard where they found 18-year-old Mateo Renato Banegas suffering multiple gunshot wounds—he was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.  New Castle County Police Department

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A WalletHub study ranks Delaware’s public education 12th as its safety measures excel—while quality metrics lag behind, with Pennsylvania lower but New Jersey and New York ahead. Public schools serving about 140,000 students will start classes on Monday, August 25.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As summer heat nears 90 degrees, the Environmental Protection Agency advises that homeowners set their air conditioners to 78°F for energy efficiency and comfort while raising the temperature by 7°F when away. The guidance also suggests lowering the setting in the evening and adjusting it at bedtime, and FEMA offers tips like closing curtains and using fans to keep indoor spaces cool.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware hired law firms (that worked for Meta) to defend Senate Bill 21 in the state Supreme Court. The state made a $100,000 flat fee deal with Wachtell Lipton (a top firm) while a local firm also helps with the case.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed a three-bill package that lets the Delaware National Guard pay tuition fees upfront—making it easier for service members to cover school costs. The package also adds military status as a protected class, designates Friday as Hire a Veteran Day, and sets the stage for a future state-level Department of Veterans Affairs.  Delaware Public Media
  • Inmate Joshua Chattin was moved from Vaughn Correctional Center to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after he spoke out about the lack of air conditioning during a heatwave and his mother’s help with three-way calls led to his phone being blocked — officials say the move is a response to his efforts — while Gov.   • Faithful Friends Animal Society will host a low-cost pet vaccine clinic next Tuesday at Claymont Community Center, 3301 Green Street.
