ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews recovered the body of a male truck driver from the Delaware River at approximately 11:10 a.m. after his Bobtail tractor crashed through a concrete wall on the Delaware Memorial Bridge Friday (rescue efforts were delayed by water conditions) and the investigation is ongoing.  First State Update

  • Advance Funds Network surveyed 3,014 people in Delaware who said they would drive over an hour to reach two hidden-gem small businesses. Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth was the top pick plus The Station on Kings in Lewes earned second for their unique offerings.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Two shootings occurred in Wilmington Friday night and Saturday morning—one incident on West 24th Street injured a 37-year-old man who was hospitalized in stable condition while another shooting on West Street left a 19-year-old man in stable condition.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Delaware Museum of Nature and Science is offering summer learning adventures with events like $5 Thursdays in July and August, a Community Overnight on July 19, and a Back to School Bash on Aug. 16 while visitors explore new exhibits and interactive displays. The museum cares for millions of scientific specimens — used by researchers to study nature and inspire hands-on learning.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council approved new nominees for its Community Police Accountability Board at a meeting on July 10 when the council voted 8—0 with four absent and council member Coby Owens voting present due to a conflict of interest, noting that the board is meant to boost transparency in policing. The board, selected by Mayor John Carney, Council President Trippi Congo, and other council members, will serve two-year paid terms and is set to hold its first meeting by the end of the summer.  Delaware Public Media
  • DelDOT will raise toll rates statewide and increase DMV fees after Governor Matt Meyer signed House Bill 164 to fund about $107 million a year for state infrastructure. The law adds an annual registration fee for more than 48,000 alternative fuel vehicles and raises document fees by 1% for all vehicle transactions, with new toll rates starting August 15 and alternative vehicle fee details coming before October 1.  First State Update
  • The police department has reopened its application process to hire entry-level recruits, Delaware-certified officers, and out-of-state officers for positions offering a starting salary of $74,453+ along with signing bonuses, take-home vehicles, and other benefits. The job includes extra-duty opportunities, 16 paid holidays, and a 20-year retirement plan to support long-term career growth.  New Castle County Police Department

  • Mark Briscoe, the pro wrestler from Laurel, was featured in a documentary from the Players’ Tribune that chronicled his career and the loss of his brother on Jan 17. The film, Two In One: The Briscoe Story, was released on July 12—just before his upcoming Casino Gauntlet Match and his continued role on AEW Dynamite and Collision.  Delaware Online
