COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 9th, the Delaware Grocery Initiative gave nearly $250,000 in grants as part of its First State Food System Grants to 22 groups fighting food deserts—recipients must finish their projects by year-end.  Delaware Public Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Delaware State Police investigated a shoplifting turned robbery at Target in Wilmington on Monday night when a Target worker confronted two female suspects — one sprayed a chemical on an employee and two customers before fleeing in a grey Honda Odyssey and three victims were treated by EMS.  First State Update
  • A 22-year-old Claymont man was arrested on July 7 at 8:35 a.m. in the Stockdale neighborhood after a dispute led him to shoot a 26-year-old man who was treated and released—police said a nearby woman, a child, and an unoccupied vehicle were not injured.  First State Update

CULTURE NEWS

  • Delaware Public Archives will host a free one-hour program called In Common Cause: Delaware’s Homefront in the Revolutionary War on Saturday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. in Dover—presented by Joseph Sullivan, the program will show how everyday citizens helped shape American independence.  Deleware State Government
  • A new clue from a fountain pen package by Ferris Wheel Press shows a Daily Planet address of 42 Concord St.—a location in Wilmington—and hints that James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie will set Metropolis in Delaware. The film will debut tomorrow.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Beachgoers on Delaware shores are reminded that four jellyfish types—including the painful Lion's Mane and the mild Moon Jellyfish—may sting if disturbed. Experts advise that if stung, remove tentacles with tweezers and soak the affected area in hot water for 20 to 45 minutes + avoid unproven remedies like urine or alcohol.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 8, Wilmington officials sent a cease and desist letter to Best Buds—run by CT Delaware LLC—after revoking its permits for misrepresentation and because a new ordinance bans recreational marijuana retail in that neighborhood; Best Buds may appeal the decision to the Wilmington Zoning Board of Adjustment.  Delaware Online
