EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monica Moriak was elected the new Christina Board of Education president on Tuesday with a narrow 4—3 vote, ending a period of controversy under former president Don Patton. The board also unanimously selected Y. F. Lou as vice president as it moves to rebuild trust with the community.  Spotlight Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers passed a bill last week that increases daily fines by as much as $30,000 for environmental violations and directs the funds to communities within two miles of polluting plants—Gov. Matt Meyer will soon sign the legislation as local residents hope it will ease pollution-related health concerns.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DNREC announced that starting Saturday, July 12th, seven state beaches will no longer require surf fishing reservations on weekends and holidays as surveys and staff feedback confirmed these sites had room for more anglers. The new rule covers about 64% of the state’s surf fishing spots + it aims to balance resource protection with public access.  Delaware Public Media
  • Wilmington City Council decided to reform the Land Bank instead of dissolving it as concerns over past mismanagement and a confusing home buying process grew. The council will vote on a plan on July 10 that adds a director role and changes the board—aiming to improve oversight and accountability.  Spotlight Delaware

  • ChristianaCare and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are teaming up to offer specialized pediatric care in a four-state region— the agreement starts in the spring and focuses on pediatric and neonatal services to bring advanced treatment closer to home.  WDEL
