COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A guide shows many fireworks displays in Delaware and Maryland, including the Wilmington Blue Rocks’ shows at Frawley Stadium after games and celebrations in Millsboro, Hockessin, Newark, Lewes, Dover, Smyrna-Clayton and Bethany Beach. Organizers say fireworks will start at set times—such as 6:35 p.m. or at dusk—and events run from June 28 through early September.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford Park’s new concert stage—which cost around $130,000—provides a professional setting for Wilmington’s free summer concert series that began on June 16 and will continue until Aug. 11 with a mix of music and food options. Friends of Wilmington Parks and Delaware State Parks worked together to design and fund the upgrade that now features a roof, more space and improved lighting for performers.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A non-profit has partnered with the City of Wilmington to launch its first summer literacy program that trains educators, AmeriCorps members and interested adults to tutor young readers. About 200 children will receive tutoring at PAL and the Hicks Anderson Community Center while Mrs—Wordsmith provides free learning materials—a plan Wilmington Mayor John Carney said will help students start the school year prepared.  WDEL
