GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware lawmakers are considering a bill that would quadruple fines for pollution and boost funds for local projects—supporters say the measure addresses long-standing environmental harm, while critics including agricultural groups worry it may hurt small family farms.  Delaware Online
  • Lt. Governor Kyle Evans Gay thanked partners for passing House Bill 169(s) that directs vital funding from the Prescription Opioid Settlement Distribution Commission to affected communities — the law streamlines decision-making processes by giving subject matter experts final authority and adding new expertise to the Behavioral Health Consortium.  Deleware State Government
  • The Delaware Office of Highway Safety’s Sober Rides program will offer ride-share vouchers for Lyft or Uber on July Fourth so residents can travel safely to holiday celebrations. Voucher codes (up to $20) will be available from 8 a.m. on July Fourth and can be redeemed from noon on July Fourth until 3:30 a.m. on July 5.  Deleware State Government
  • State lawmakers approved Senate Bill 75, which lowers zoning restrictions for marijuana dispensaries by reducing the buffer to 500 feet and allowing current licensees to stay in place, and the bill now awaits Gov. Matt Meyer’s signature. Local officials warned the change may override municipal zoning rules (more than one third of municipalities have banned such shops) (and could lessen community control).  Spotlight Delaware
  • Today, Governor Matt Meyer swore in Judge Monica A. Horton to serve on the New Castle County Superior Court after her confirmation by the State Senate. Judge Horton brings both legal and nursing expertise — she has clerked in family court and handled civil cases — and is set to provide balanced judgment in her new role.  Deleware State Government

HEALTH NEWS

  • Grants from the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities have funded healthy aging classes like a chair yoga session at Weston Senior Center, and a University of Delaware team is studying the program's impact on local senior wellness. The team has also led workshops for senior center administrators to identify sustainable funding—efforts that follow rising membership and increased social connections among older residents.  University of Delaware
