CRIME NEWS

  • Gordon Turner was indicted for murder after he drove a stolen U-Haul truck that hit a UD student on East Main Street in Newark on April 29th, killing one student and critically injuring another—Attorney General Kathy Jennings noted he faced out-of-state warrants and carried an illegal firearm, and his bail was raised to $2-million.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Delaware launched the First State AI Institute on June 24 led by Prof. Sunita Chandrasekaran to develop open-source AI tools that help researchers and improve campus operations—funded by the Unidel Foundation and supported by dedicated Research Software Engineers.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC cited Delaware City Refinery for a March 13 incident that released 38,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 262,000 pounds of carbon monoxide with visible black smoke for about ten hours— the agency served a notice of violation on May 29 and will soon calculate the penalty while investigating a second device failure in late May and early June. This marks the fourth notice received in the past 12 months.  Delaware Public Media
  • Veolia opened its new $35M PFAS water treatment facility in Stanton that treats up to 30 million gallons of water per day and meets federal limits four years early—providing safe water to more than 100,000 residents—and testing new filtration materials for better performance.  Delaware LIVE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware House sent its $6.58 billion operating budget to the Senate and advanced a constitutional amendment to ban the death penalty, with the measure now needing a two-thirds Senate vote and subsequent passage in both chambers in 2027. The budget includes 2% raises for education and state merit employees, as well as funding for free school breakfasts, early literacy programs, and additional health benefits — key measures aimed at strengthening state services.  Delaware Public Media
  • Rep. Stell Parker Selby resigned after missing the session due to complications from a stroke last year. House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown said she received the resignation letter Tuesday morning and has 10 days to request a special election to fill the seat.  Spotlight Delaware
