CRIME NEWS

  • Delaware State Police arrested 46-year-old Daniel Steele for the murder of his 75-year-old mother following a welfare check in Millsboro at about 6:00 p.m. on June 15 — officers say he assaulted her during a dispute and he is now held on a $1,000,000 cash bond.  First State Update
  • A 33-year-old man, Dhron Goldsborough, was charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Aaron Reid on June 11th in Wilmington’s Hilltop neighborhood and faces attempted murder, weapons charges and conspiracy — he was indicted on June 9th and taken into custody on June 14th after failing to post over $4 million in cash bail.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the 38th Clifford Brown Jazz Festival begins at Rodney Square as a tribute to Wilmington native Clifford Brown, a trumpeter who died in a traffic accident in 1956. Guests may bring lawn chairs and blankets—free performances will continue through Saturday.  WDEL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Deborah Heffernan withdrew her bill that would limit hemp products to select stores after CBD shop owners, customers and marijuana advocates raised concerns — the measure would have restricted sales of THC-infused drinks and gummies. She said she will work on a new proposal in the coming months as lawmakers finish their session on June 30.  WHYY
  • Lawmakers in Dover killed a bill to change personal income tax brackets intended to help low-income taxpayers, while the Senate approved fee increases for DNREC and DelDOT expected to bring in nearly $39 million. The fee packages include higher DMV fees and new toll hikes — now the measures go to Governor Matt Meyer for his signature and will take effect later this year.  Delaware Public Media
  • State lawmakers will vote next week on a bill sponsored by Sen. Trey Paradee that would reduce county buffer zones for marijuana dispensaries to 500 feet from schools, treatment facilities, and libraries—aiming to ease restrictions for operators in a soon-to-launch recreational marijuana market. Local officials argue the measure oversteps local zoning authority and limits their control over land use decisions.  Spotlight Delaware

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delaware is expected to experience an extreme heat wave this summer with high temperatures and humidity that make the heat index rise—causing dangers such as cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke for vulnerable groups. Residents and pet owners are advised to follow heat advisories and take safety steps like staying cool and drinking water—especially those most at risk.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware is expanding mental health support for farmers at high risk of suicide due to stress and isolation by launching an awareness campaign that prints crisis hotline numbers on tractor stickers+distributes outreach materials to encourage early help. The Delaware Farm Bureau and Agriculture Department say they will gather data and plan further initiatives+increase intervention efforts to support farmers before crises occur.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Parents in Delaware are warned that products sold as gas station heroin contain banned tianeptine—a a drug that can cause severe and even fatal side effects. Delaware’s House passed a bill to ban tianeptine and the measure now awaits further Senate action.  Delaware Online
