CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington Police arrested 27 year old Yaphet White on Sunday morning during a traffic stop near 9th & Madison streets after a Saturday afternoon shooting on North Franklin Street that wounded two men, one in critical condition, and he is held at Howard Young Correctional Institution on $280,000 cash bail facing charges of attempted murder, assault and possession of a firearm during a felony.  WDEL
  • On June 14th, 2025 at 11:35 p.m., New Castle County police responded to a report at Golden Acres Drive in Riverview Place Apartments and recovered a stolen black Kia Sportage from Elsmere along with a bronze Kia Sorento reported from Wilmington; they detained a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old, and Ronald Perkins (18) and charged them with felony counts of receiving stolen property and conspiracy in the second degree—with the 15-year-old also charged for noncompliance with conditions of a recognizance bond.  New Castle County Police Department

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 14th, Hailey Mack of Ocean View was crowned Miss Delaware and earned over $10,000 in scholarship money while Avery Martinenza of Newark was named Miss Delaware’s Teen and received $2,800 in scholarships. Both will compete nationally in September—using their titles to support STEM and raise leukemia and lymphoma awareness.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shaun Zetlin returned to campus on June 16th to share his story of overcoming childhood challenges and embracing emotional fitness—he explained how his early hardships inspired him to launch a business and write a book on self-love and resilience. The Blue Hen alumnus, speaking in a talk sponsored by the Departments of English and Athletics, highlighted his journey from a shy child to a published author and dedicated trainer.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents near the Delaware City Refinery are calling for tougher environmental laws after a mechanical failure caused the plant to emit excess sulfur dioxide for nearly three weeks, though officials said the air remained safe and the equipment was fixed last week. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is investigating the violation — lawmakers are proposing higher fines and improved air monitoring — to hold chronic polluters accountable.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DNREC is asking for public comments on a draft list of threats and conservation actions as it updates the Delaware Wildlife Action Plan—this plan will guide efforts to protect the state’s most vulnerable species through 2035. Public meetings will be held in July and August, and the full draft will be available for review later this summer.  Deleware State Government
  • Today, Delaware lawmakers begin a busy week of public meetings to review high-profile bills on issues like higher income taxes for top earners, free school breakfasts, and government oversight—while several committees will also debate measures on immigration and healthcare funding. The Joint Finance Committee meets today at 12 p.m.—at Legislative Hall—to reconsider a funding freeze for the hospital cost-cutting board amid rising cost concerns.  Spotlight Delaware

  • Twisted Irons Craft Brewing Company will receive the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s 2025 Shining Light Award for its strong support in fighting breast cancer. The award will be given on Wednesday, August 6 at The Waterfall in Claymont—its efforts include donating $1 per pint sold—helping fund vital programs.  Delaware LIVE

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 54th Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games were held at the University of Delaware over the weekend with more than 1,100 athletes competing in six sports. Outdoor events were cancelled because of dangerous air quality from New Jersey wildfire smoke + indoor competitions in powerlifting, bocce and tennis continued, while officials praised coaches + volunteers for their support.  Delaware LIVE
