CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington police responded to gunfire on the 1300 block of Linden Street on Sunday, June 1 at 9:18 p.m.—a 23-year-old man was taken to the hospital in stable condition as investigators work to determine what happened.  First State Update
  • New Castle County Police charged 34-year-old Joseph Caceres, a school van driver for Red Lion Christian Academy from Bear area, with five counts of third degree rape after he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student from November 2024 to May this year—he is held at Howard Young prison on $100,000 cash bail.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Delaware will host a busy month of festivals and events in June—featuring the six-day Trinity Greek Festival in Wilmington, self-guided haunted tours at Rockwood Museum, and Separation Day celebrations in New Castle—with additional music, parades and cultural gatherings in Dover, Houston and Smyrna.   • Statewide public hearings held Monday set changes for school funding and offshore wind permits, and budget sessions in Dover continued today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wilmington City Council will vote on a rent stabilization ordinance and the Delaware Supreme Court will hear Biden laptop case arguments Wednesday at 11:10 a.m. — actions that may shape state and city policy — providing key updates for local residents.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Delaware tax filers who have not yet received their refund can check the status on the Delaware Tax Portal or by calling 302-577-8200 — the IRS noted that delays may stem from errors, incomplete forms, or identity theft, and refunds may take up to 12 weeks to be processed.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware lawmakers approved a Senate bill to reduce PFAS in drinking water—mandating water providers to begin testing in January 2026 and lower levels by 2029—and the measure now awaits a House vote while the EPA seeks to extend compliance deadlines and ease restrictions. The state plans to use funds from a DuPont settlement to help cover treatment costs as federal rules are weakened.  WHYY

  • On Friday, a judge ruled that legal arguments by ChristianaCare against the state board that controls hospital budgets have merit—letting the lawsuit continue and challenging the board’s authority.
