COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eighteen-year-old Bryce Diaz volunteers at the Clayton Fire Company while working full time at AAMCO car repair in Dover—he attends classes at the Delaware Fire School and balanced his time to earn the April Member of the Month title. Diaz works hard to build his firefighting skills and serve his Smyrna-Clayton community.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 23rd, Wilmington police responded to a shooting near West 23rd and Washington Streets at about 7:44 p.m.—they found two male victims, with 24-year-old Abu Thomas later dying at the hospital while a 25-year-old remained in stable condition, and detectives are seeking information from the public.  First State Update
  • Wilmington police identified Abu Thomas— a 24-year-old man fatally shot on May 23 near West 23rd Street and Washington Street— as the victim who died in the hospital from gunshot wounds; a 25-year-old was injured and is in stable condition.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Padua Academy graduated 95 students on May 29 at Abessino Stadium, where Most Reverend William E. Koenig, D.D. conferred diplomas to the Class of 2025 amid support from faculty, staff, and family.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Delaware House bill sponsored by Rep. Debra Heffernan was introduced on May 28 to update or create fees for permits and licenses in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. The proposed changes aim to better match fees to regulatory costs + support filling vacant positions, and the bill will take effect 180 days after it is enacted if passed.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced Tuesday that the state reserved $5.5 million to fund 15 Downtown Development projects in Dover, Laurel, Georgetown, and Wilmington through the DSHA’s program—this funding is expected to boost $173.6 million in private investment for revitalization. The initiative supports projects like Villa Maria at Brandywine and The Old Post to improve local downtown areas.  Delaware LIVE
  • Today, Governor Matt Meyer signed an Executive Order that creates the Office of Workforce Development within the Delaware Department of Labor—designed to streamline job training resources—and reorganizes the Workforce Development Board to better guide education and job programs across the state.  Deleware State Government

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by Caring.com found that Delaware ranked third nationwide for senior happiness with a score of 7.01 out of 10 + the research looked at factors such as access to senior centers and health measures. The study also showed that the state ranked 9th in overall senior health + was recently named the best state for retirement, making it a top choice for older residents.  Delaware LIVE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thursday's DIAA spring sports update showed Cape Henlopen beat Delaware Military Academy 7—5 in baseball and that Friday's semifinals at Frawley Stadium will feature teams including Cape Henlopen, Salesianum, Sussex Central and Conrad. The update also listed matchups in softball, girls lacrosse, girls soccer, boys lacrosse, volleyball, golf, track and tennis—with games scheduled Saturday at Caesar Rodney and Sunday at Frawley Stadium.  Delaware Online
