COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Delaware met with partner agencies at Legislative Hall early this morning to address rising food costs that force families to choose between paying bills and buying groceries (including working adults and seniors facing reduced benefits). The organization said higher transport and supply expenses are making food aid more costly, intensifying local need.  Delaware Online

  • On May 16, a Wilmington motorcyclist died when a car struck his Harley on Limestone Road and his family plans to work with state officials to boost safety measures.  6abc

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers of the Delaware 250 Ride are launching an Unheard Voices Spotlight series that will feature Mary Vining to shine a light on lesser-known Revolutionary-era stories ahead of Caesar Rodney’s reenactment. The reenactment is set to take place on June 12–13.  Delaware LIVE
  • Beach music events are set for the season after recent rain delays; Ocean Downs in Berlin will host Starship featuring Mickey Thomas on Sept. 5, Lewes’ Rocking the Docks benefit will take place on June 7, and Dewey Beach venues Bottle & Cork, Northbeach, and The Listening Booth have diverse gigs planned from May 29 onward.  Delaware Online

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 5.3% in April from 5.4% in March, with 27,100 people unemployed plus nonfarm jobs down by 1,900 since last April as Manufacturing and Financial sectors each lost 500 jobs, showing long-term challenges persist.  Delaware Public Media

  • University of Delaware hosted a symposium on April 27 at its STAR campus to boost research-to-market translation using AI and strengthened industry partnerships; the event highlighted updated policies that encourage translating academic innovation into practical solutions for our community.  University of Delaware
  • Former dean and professor Donald Allan Waterfield Jr. passed away April 29 at 84 and is remembered for his role in health promotion at UD. A memorial celebration will be held at Seacoast Science Center in Rye on Saturday, June 13 at 3 p.m.  University of Delaware
  • Delaware transportation officials rejected a $900,000 grant request submitted by Dan Bond for the ASPIRA bilingual charter school building in Georgetown & project leaders must now secure alternative funding for the school slated to open in fall 2027.  Spotlight Delaware

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware officials announced Friday a plan to close a funding gap for the new Edgemoor port by adding $110 million in state funds, supplementing $69 million from the federal government and $75 million from Enstructure; lawmakers are finalizing budget details to support the project expected to create thousands of jobs.  Spotlight Delaware

  • Caravel defeated St. Mark's 8-2 on May 27, advancing to the DIAA Softball State Tournament semifinals. Standout pitching by sophomore Kaley Arrowsmith and a key home run from sophomore Katie Pinand helped secure the win.  Delaware LIVE
  • Caravel’s Kaley Arrowsmith threw a no-hitter on May 27 as her team edged Sussex Tech 1 to 0, while Sussex Central beat Lake Forest 12 to 10. The two teams will play for the DIAA softball title on May 29 at 7:00 p.m. at UD.  Delaware Online
