- ➤ Wilmington Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday when officers responded to gunfire near West 23rd and Washington Streets—finding a 24-year-old man who later died from his injuries and a 25-year-old man in stable condition—as the investigation continues. - ➤ Delaware State University announced a one-year hiring freeze that will begin June 1 to safeguard against uncertain federal and state funding while limiting new hires to critical roles. - ➤ Wilmington City Council passed the operating budget for fiscal year 2026 on May 23 after a heated debate over property tax rates set at $3.74 per $1,000 for residential and $5.83 for nonresidential properties—rates adjusted for new reassessed values. The $201.7 million budget passed by a 12-1 vote and projects a surplus of over $2.5 million as the council met the legal requirement to finalize it 30 days before the fiscal year starts. - ➤ Governor Matt Meyer proclaimed May 26th to May 30th as Hurricane Preparedness Week and DEMA with local agencies is urging Wilmington residents to prepare for the hurricane season that starts June 1st—residents are advised to review emergency plans and secure homes to reduce storm risks. - ➤ Newark's state Senate passed House Bill 34—letting the city charge up to $50 per student per semester—and now the bill waits for Gov. Matt Meyer's signature. - ➤ Delaware lawmakers moved two tax bills closer to law—one would let Newark charge a $50 fee for each UD student and one would raise a low-income tax credit.
