COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newark’s Memorial Day parade saw a drop to 22 groups from 29 last year, with low turnout likely linked to student move-out, raising local questions about parade relevance. Upcoming parades in Middletown, Smyrna & Wilmington will honor veterans on May 25 and May 30.  Delaware Online
  • DNREC opened a new 13,242 sqft pool today at Killens Pond Waterpark in Felton. The pool, 48% larger than before, features spray areas, lily pads, a zero-entry design and improved lifeguard views (theme nights drop July 10, Aug. 10, and Puppies in the Pool Sept. 7).  Deleware State Government

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vietnam War veteran Jim Whittaker, 80, has maintained a 40-year Memorial Day tradition by sitting on a bench at the Vietnam War Memorial in Brandywine Park today, honoring his fallen comrades (he also volunteers weekly at the Wilmington VA Medical Center) to preserve their stories.  6abc

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A labor review published Friday, May 22 found that Delaware lost jobs in April and recorded a slight drop in its unemployment rate.  Bay to Bay News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UD alumni will travel to Arlington on May 29 for the interment of 2nd Lt. Jason K. Goldwater (identified last year after a Project Recover mission), as more than a dozen Blue Hens honor his legacy at the ceremony.  University of Delaware
  • State Rep. Kim Williams and education advocates are championing $800,000 pilot rental voucher program to help 50 families with schoolchildren living in motels or shelters (funding to be approved by state lawmakers by the end of June); the program would launch in fiscal year 2027 (designed to support student success).  WHYY
  • University of Delaware released its ‘For the Record’ update with news including Justin Wing’s appointment to the Delaware Council on Libraries effective May 20, awards for UD materials research and creative entrepreneurship, national conference presentations and gold honors for UD’s NSSLHA chapter.  University of Delaware
  • Mariah Calagione, a former UD trustee and co-founder of Dogfish Head, will deliver UD’s 2026 Commencement address today at 9:15 a.m. in Delaware Stadium on the Newark campus — a ticketed event for about 4,000 graduates and their guests.  WDEL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delmarva Power is giving away trees to customers starting May 22 as part of Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees program — the 700-tree selection, including red maple, river birch and bald cypress, may help lower energy bills by up to 30 percent — and orders go online while supplies last.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DelDOT is enforcing speed limits on northbound I-95 in the Churchmans Marsh work zone as its speed camera goes live today after a three-week warning period. In that period, over 10,000 vehicles exceeded 55 mph and some reached over 100 mph + face high fines.  WDEL
  • The Veterans Affairs and Commission are hosting two Memorial Day ceremonies honoring fallen servicemembers; the first is today at 10 a.m. at New Castle Cemetery (2465 Chesapeake City Rd, Bear) and the second is on May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at War Memorial Plaza in New Castle.  Deleware State Government

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local drivers can explore several scenic routes this summer, including a 15-mile coastal drive on Route 1 from Bethany Beach to historic landmarks, and a nature trip from Smyrna to Laurel to view wildlife. Options also include a short ride from Wilmington to the Pennsylvania state line + quaint attractions.  Delaware Online

  • DIAA released updated scores and schedules for its spring sports tournaments including ETSOFTBALL, girls lacrosse, and boys lacrosse. Some games finished recently while others take place today and on Tuesday, May 26 at local venues such as Tower Hill (a key tournament site) and the University of Delaware.  Delaware Online
  • On May 22, Katelyn Young of Charter won the Delaware Online Athlete of the Week award after posting .833, seven runs, seven RBIs and three stolen bases in wins over Dickinson, MOT Charter and Ursuline; she earned the honor via an online vote over four nominees.  Delaware Online
