CRIME NEWS

  • Delaware resident Zakiya Riddick found over $800 in SNAP benefits were stolen from her EBT card when she tried to buy a drink at a Newark convenience store—her card showed only 90 cents—while state leaders say victims must rely on food banks since federal reimbursements ended in December.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down on May 16 during strong storms that hit parts of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. The EF-1 tornado in Delaware—snapping trees and moving a building near Bethel—caused damage with no injuries while the EF-0 tornado in New Jersey left minor tree damage.  First State Update

  • Former President Joe Biden received an aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis on May 16 during a routine exam and is reviewing treatment options while local officials including Gov. Matt Meyer and Mayor John Carney sent support—saying the people of Delaware stand with him—calling him a fighter.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware lawmakers have introduced four bills to limit ICE by stopping federal agents from making arrests in courtrooms without warrants and banning private detention centers — the proposals, led by Rep. Mara Gorman, will be reviewed by the House Judiciary Committee on May 21 — as part of efforts to address growing immigration enforcement operations.  Spotlight Delaware
  • On Monday, Delaware's finance council reported its projected state funds for the next fiscal year in New Castle while Port of Wilmington oversight boards held public meetings to discuss expansion plans for a $635 million container terminal—actions that could shape upcoming legislative debates. At noon today, the House Transportation Committee will consider a bill to impose an extra $110 fee on electric vehicles registered in the state.  Spotlight Delaware
