BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nine small Delaware businesses received $1.15M in EDGE 2.0 grants awarded Tuesday at Delaware Technical Community College’s Owens Campus in Georgetown, helping fund projects from a new indoor play center in Milford to renovations in Lewes for STEM and entrepreneur initiatives.  WDEL
  • ChristianaCare launched a nonprofit software company called DECODR in Newark to help researchers quickly and accurately measure CRISPR gene edits. The tool, developed over seven years by Newark Charter High School junior Rohan Kanchana, has processed 1.7 million files and now supports 5,000 users worldwide.  WDEL
  • Surf Bagel is preparing to open its seventh location (Churchmans Place Shopping Center) at 1103 Churchmans Road near Christiana Hospital this spring, expanding its Delaware beach brand into New Castle County. The store will offer a full breakfast and lunch menu with indoor seating and online ordering while hiring about 30 employees.  Delaware LIVE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers are working to boost education by reinvigorating reading instruction and modernizing school funding through bills SB 302 and SB 303 + these measures aim to support teacher pay increases and literacy initiatives for K-5 classrooms.  Delaware Online
  • School staff who support student mental health will be honored on Monday, May 18 during a state event hosted by the Department of Education. The live celebration at 7:15 p.m. will feature local Behavioral Health Professionals of the Year from districts and charter schools.  Deleware State Government
  • Delaware voters elected several new school board members Tuesday (pushing for greater transparency) in seven districts, including Appoquinimink, Christina, Delmar and Red Clay. The fresh faces replaced incumbents and will shape education governance going forward.  Spotlight Delaware

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • While Georgia, Indiana, and Utah offer gas tax holidays, drivers in Delaware and Pennsylvania still pay full tax + Delaware created a Motor Fuel Tax Holiday Fund in 2022 to cover any pause, though neither state has scheduled a tax break and competing bills in Pennsylvania remain undecided.  Delaware Online
  • Legislation raising fees for limited liability companies and expedited services is headed to Gov. Matt Meyer’s desk as part of his $6.9 billion budget to close a $500 million deficit — Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend said the measure will generate over $140 million from about 1.6 million entities.  WHYY
  • Delaware Medicare beneficiaries now have new rights under the 'Birthday Rule' special enrollment period that began January 1, 2026. Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro said residents can switch Medigap plans without medical underwriting within a 30-day window before and after their birthday — a change that helps those moving from Medicare Advantage.  Deleware State Government

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Historic Kalmar Nyckel offers two sailing trips, a 1.5-hour Christina River Cruise from Wilmington starting May 16 and a 2.5-hour Day Sail from New Castle beginning May 29. Tickets cost ($25-$45 for the cruise and $40-$65 for the sail) with riders arriving 30 minutes early.  Delaware Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wilmington’s 18th Grand Prix brings elite bicycle races to the streets this weekend. Friday, May 15 will feature the Monkey Hill Time Trial at Brandywine Park (4 to 8 p.m.) with food trucks and live music, while Saturday and Sunday offer community rides and a full day street festival.  WDEL
  • Delaware Stadium will host an NCAA Men’s Lacrosse quarterfinal double-header on Sunday, May 17. Princeton plays Penn State at noon and Georgetown meets Duke at 2:30 p.m. Fans can watch the games on ESPNU or stream them on the ESPN app.  Delaware Online
