COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Delaware Natural Resources Police will host the 39th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 7 at three ponds—Blockhouse Pond in Lewes, Akridge Scout Reservation near Dover and Lums Pond near Bear—with free entry for children ages four to 15. Families must preregister by May 23 and weighmasters will record catches while winners earn a trophy at the Delaware State Fair in July.  Delaware LIVE

  • School board elections will take place May 13 in New Castle County as six contests in Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Red Clay and Christina districts let voters choose candidates focused on mental health support, classroom behavior and academic accountability - polling will run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Delaware Online
  • Governor Meyer is giving more time for high school juniors and seniors from Delaware public schools to apply for the one open student seat on the State Board of Education — the selected representative will attend monthly board meetings and serve a one-year term during the academic year from 2025 to 2026, with applications accepted until Monday evening.  WDEL
  • Zip Code Wilmington is a nonprofit that trains local workers to become software engineers and has graduated over 740 students with an 85% placement rate — many now work at top tech firms. The program started ten years ago and offers 90-day courses that teach in-demand coding skills for high-paying jobs — helping change lives in our community.  Delaware Online

  • Delaware Governor Matt Meyer announced Tuesday the creation of the Delaware Food is Medicine Committee to use nutrition in healthcare to fight chronic diseases and lower costs. The committee—chaired by Lieutenant Governor Kyle Evans Gay—will promote health equity and support local agriculture under the Delaware Council on Farm & Food Policy.  Delaware LIVE
