COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The National Association of Letter Carriers will run its annual Stamp Out Hunger drive on Saturday, May 9, asking residents to place a bag of nonperishable food next to their mailbox to aid families in need. Volunteers are still needed at post offices in Bear, Milford, and Edgemoor.  Delaware Online

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cars from Ford, Volkswagen, Chrysler and Hyundai will be recalled for safety issues such as loose seat bolts, sensor misassembly and faulty belts. Affected owners will receive notification letters between May 11 and June 23 and can visit local dealerships in Dover, Newark and New Castle for free repairs.  Delaware Online

  • Businesses across Delaware are celebrating Cinco de Mayo today with special deals and festive events; Taco Grande in Wilmington offers $3 select tacos & margaritas while venues in Newark, Dover, Rehoboth, Greenville, and Lewes feature unique food and drink promotions.  Delaware Online
  • Famed composer John Williams created an exclusive string quartet arrangement—'With Malice Toward None'—for Delaware’s Calidore String Quartet in residence at the University of Delaware.   • Rising gas prices above $4 have pushed Delaware shoppers to use grocery store loyalty programs to earn fuel discounts. Local outlets like Wawa, Safeway, and Walmart+ offer rewards that help save money at pumps.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Residents can learn how to vote in Delaware school board elections on May 12. Officials encourage checking local guidelines and polling locations to ensure proper registration and a counted vote.  Delaware Online
  • The University of Delaware Board of Trustees will meet Monday, May 11 at 3 p.m. in the Audion at STAR Tower for its spring semiannual meeting, and the event will include public comment via an online request form.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal and state regulators are investigating a leak of under 10 pounds of cancer-causing ethylene oxide that occurred on April 14 at Croda’s plant near the Delaware Memorial Bridge; the company said its systems quickly contained the leak and found no risk to local residents (no injuries reported).  Delaware Online

  • DNREC will host its first community meeting to address the detection of CWD in white-tailed deer at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 at Baldcypress Nature Center at Trap Pond State Park in Laurel — virtual attendance is available and park fees will be waived for in-person guests until 8.  Deleware State Government

HEALTH NEWS

  • UD epidemiologist Daniel Harris leads a Delaware INBRE-funded pilot study on prescription cannabinoids in nursing homes to examine their safety + impact on fall risk and pain management for dementia patients. Doctoral student Kareem Khairy will review electronic health records from 2017 to 2023 to guide future treatment choices.  University of Delaware

  • DelawareOnline has compiled a list of the top 10 local field hockey players including Brenda Becker, Katelyn Falgowski and Dawn Hill. Residents can vote online now to name the all-time best player.  Delaware Online
  • After winning five of six games against the Asheville Tourists from Apr. 30 to May 3, the Blue Rocks ended first month at 15-11, half a game behind first. They will return on May 19 for an eight-game home series with promotions (Pups in the Park and $2 hot dogs).  Delaware LIVE
