CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested 22-year-old Jermaine Winckler after a brief foot chase on April 15 in Wilmington when officers stopped a vehicle at 11 a.m. on Lafayette Boulevard and recovered three handguns—a .38 caliber, a loaded 9mm, and a loaded .40 caliber reported stolen—and he is held on $80,000 cash only bail on three charges including carrying a concealed deadly weapon and resisting arrest.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Black Girls With Green Thumbs has launched an earth-to-table gardening program at Emlen Elementary where children with autism learn to grow food (including sunflowers and microgreens). Pamia Coleman and Latiaynna Tabb said the program teaches self-sufficiency and connects kids to the source of their meals.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control released a report card on the health of wetlands in the Delaware and Maryland parts of the Pocomoke watershed yesterday—earning an overall grade of A-.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matthew Meyer joined state officials to demonstrate new E911 upgrades like live video and text translation at the Dover Police Department Communications Center—one of the first to use the system; officials said all Public Safety Answering Points will be upgraded by 2026, funded by a monthly surcharge on phone lines.  Deleware State Government
  • Governor Matt Meyer signed Executive Order #8 today at the New Castle County HOPE Center to start the Delaware Interagency Collaborative to End Homelessness—an effort that will cut homelessness in half and end youth homelessness within five years. The 15-member group will study housing programs and work with state and local agencies to find lasting solutions.  Deleware State Government
  • At an April 17 meeting, City Council approved using money from the canceled St. Francis Hospital contract to add 30 new firefighters and EMTs, an EMS manager and a battalion chief—while removing one lieutenant position. The plan will bring five ambulances into service by late summer and start a recruit academy in May.  Delaware Online
  • The Delaware State Fire Commission reaffirmed its commitment to respect and diversity by strongly denouncing racial harassment in light of recent incidents reported in the fire service—an investigation by the Millville Fire Company led to a referral to police for suspected criminal behavior. It urged fire companies statewide to update anti-harassment policies and boost diversity training to prevent future incidents.  Deleware State Government
  • Lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that lets people very sick with six months or less to live get a medicine to end their suffering. The law passed with a vote of 11 to 8+ has safeguards to make sure the choice is voluntary+ and now goes to Governor Matt Meyer for review.  WDEL
  • On Thursday, April 17th, Governor Matt Meyer signed an emergency order to create a 15-member interagency collaborative aimed at cutting homelessness in half over the next five years and ensuring every juvenile has stable housing, as the homeless population rose 16 percent with 27.3 percent under 18. He spoke at The Hope Center on Airport Road and said the panel may explore applying similar measures in Kent and Sussex Counties.  WDEL
