COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The DNREC will launch its free 'Take a Kid Fishing!' program on April 22 and run it through August 2 at locations including AREC near Smyrna and Bellevue State Park in Wilmington—teaching kids ages 6 to 15 fishing skills, conservation, and catch-and-release practices while families preregister for equipment.  Delaware LIVE

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Liberty Mutual (with two other companies) paid a $300,000 penalty after state regulators found the companies advertised fake premium discounts on auto and homeowners' insurance in Delaware. The state insurance department found nearly 40,000 errors in the ads and said another $200,000 in penalties will be due if the issues are not fixed.  Deleware State Government
  • Liberty Mutual must pay $300,000 for false advertising premium discounts on auto and homeowners insurance — the penalty applies to three member companies and an extra $200,000 will be added if the company does not fix the problem immediately. The state Department of Insurance found nearly 40,000 misleading ads between January 1st, 2021, and July 31st, 2023.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • Delaware State Police said an Uber driver was assaulted and robbed near Minquadale on April 13 when a group of teenagers pushed him to the ground at about 1:30 a.m. and stole his cell phone and car, and the driver was not hurt.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Holy Cross School in Dover earned first and second place in this year's Junior Solar Sprint at Delaware State University—an event where 11 teams raced solar-powered model cars—and the top team will represent Delaware at the national TSA conference in Nashville from June 27 to July 1.  Delaware LIVE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware 250 grant opportunities are now open for non-profit organizations and local municipalities to plan public programs and projects that celebrate Delaware’s rich history leading to the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Applicants must submit proposals by May 15th or August 15th and use matching funds for awards over $7,500—eligible expenses include research, program development and site improvements.  Deleware State Government
  • Today at Philadelphia Immigration Court, many Delaware immigrants appeared without a lawyer as they waited in a small room for life-changing decisions on their cases—many have their next hearings set years later and must find legal help on their own. The growing backlog and shortage of affordable assistance add to the strain on those facing deportation.  Delaware Online
  • On Sunday, April 13, 2025, Councilwoman Joann Personti took the oath of office as Elsmere's mayor during an Easter egg hunt at Vilone Park, where she volunteers each year. She succeeded Eric Thompson—who resigned abruptly after facing criticism for missing the funeral of a local police lieutenant.  WDEL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Records show that in summer 2023, staff at MeadowWood Behavioral Health waited nine minutes to start CPR on an unconscious patient, according to state inspection reports obtained by Spotlight Delaware. A lawsuit alleging staff negligence and other CPR training issues has raised concerns about care at the hospital (corrective training is due by December).  Spotlight Delaware
