EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newark, home to the University of Delaware, is ranked 42nd among the nation’s top college towns with a score of 89.17— it is also named the ninth-best college town in the South by RentCafe after reviewing academics, cost of living, tuition fees, graduation rates, natural amenities, air quality and entertainment options.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced winners of two competitions held this week when a team of middle school students at Holy Cross School in Dover won the Junior Solar Sprint at Delaware State University while another team finished second and a third from Frederick Thomas Middle placed third. Odessa High School's FFA and Agriscience team won the Delaware Envirothon at Blackbird State Forest — breaking a 22-year winning streak by Charter School of Wilmington and earning each member a $500 scholarship and a plaque for their school.  WDEL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEPTA's proposed operating budget could end all rail service in Delaware later this year if Pennsylvania does not secure enough funding. Local leaders urge lawmakers to pass Governor Shapiro's nearly $300 million transit funding measure — public hearings on the cuts are scheduled for May 19 and 20.  Delaware Online
  • The state's Office of Animal Welfare partnered with DocuPet to launch a new dog licensing program — it makes it easier for dog owners to register their pets and helps free up shelter space. The program also waives late fees for expired licenses until July 15.  WDEL
  • The Delaware Office of Highway Safety is taking part in National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and is working with law enforcement to patrol roads while reminding drivers and pedestrians that distractions while driving are illegal and dangerous. Data from 2020 to 2024 showed 9,213 crashes, 174 serious injuries, and 20 deaths plus not paying attention caused 21 percent of fatal crashes among drivers in their twenties and drivers in the later thirties to early forties.  WDEL

HEALTH NEWS

  • On April 10, 2025, an 87 year old woman in Brandywine Hundred did not respond to her daily phone check and was later found sitting on her enclosed rear porch unable to stand. Officers from New Castle County Police conducted a welfare check and transported her to a local hospital for evaluation after discovering she had been without food or water since about 3 p.m. the previous day—exposing her to 40 degrees overnight.  New Castle County Police Department
