ECONOMY NEWS

  • Research shows that grocery store openings can point to a neighborhood's economic future, with Trader Joe's following areas with higher incomes and rising home values while Walmart serves lower-income communities in Delaware.  Delaware Online
  • Delmarva Power asked state regulators to raise electricity bills by $15 to cover higher supply costs — the increase is expected to be approved automatically and is part of planned hikes, including a 4% rate jump set for July.  Spotlight Delaware

  • The University of Delaware announced Greg Walters as vice president of Facilities Services and Campus Planning beginning June 1. The Navy veteran with 28+ years of experience will direct campus maintenance and oversee all renovations.  University of Delaware

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 1, the city provided marked lots, pallets, tents & cots for unsheltered residents in Christina Park. The move aimed to offer basic shelter and support to people living at the encampment.  Delaware Online
  • DelDOT is planning to extend the Washington Street separated bike lane through downtown to Delaware Ave to create a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists. The design phase is expected to finish by Spring 2027 & implementation will follow in late summer 2027 or 2028.  Delaware Public Media
  • Delaware lawmakers are debating two bills on kratom, an herbal supplement sold in gas stations & smoke shops, with one bill set to ban it and another proposing limits on products with added contaminants as lawmakers return on April 14.  WHYY

  • On Wednesday, the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement unveiled Care for Good, a program that offers nonprofits a stable way to manage rising health care costs for various employee sizes + partners with Angle Health and Weiner Benefits Group. The solution aims to provide tailored, transparent coverage for nonprofit employees.  WDEL
  • ChristianaCare announced Monday it will build a $75 million, 92,000 sqft inpatient rehabilitation facility for physical, speech and occupational therapy near its Newark hospital that will open in summer 2028, creating 122 new jobs and easing the strain on Wilmington Hospital's emergency department.  Spotlight Delaware

  • Delaware Online released the first 200 baseball photos from High School Baseball and Softball Media Day held March 18 at Frawley Stadium (the only pro baseball stadium in the state).
