ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters and Coast Guard crews are battling a scrap fire on a barge in Delaware Bay today; the vessel, moved to Bombay anchorage (with no crew onboard), is prompting officials to advise residents to stay indoors if heavy smoke drifts nearby.  WHYY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Helen’s Sausage House will open a new restaurant in Lewes later this fall. Construction will begin this spring at The Vineyards - 21431 Zinfandel Lane, located near Routes 1 and 9.  Delaware LIVE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents, school leaders and supporters voiced concerns at a public hearing on Monday as state officials weighed revoking Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence charter over issues like low enrollment, finances and operations (supporters stressed the school had helped students meet their IEPs). A final decision is expected March 19.  WDEL
  • Delaware students in the Class of 2025 earned 11,218 AP exam scores of 3 or higher that are projected to save families $18.4 million in college tuition. A new law requires public colleges to grant credit for these scores as the education department expands challenging coursework across the state.  WDEL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC’s Polly Drummond Hill yard waste site in Newark reopens Saturday, March 14 for northern New Castle County residents to drop off yard waste on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the fall; residents should mulch or compost it (no commercial haulers allowed).  Deleware State Government
  • DNREC signed a contract with First State Crane Service to resume sand pumping at Indian River Inlet beach. Prep work started this week and pumping is expected to begin later—with access restricted during operations until May 15, though work will resume after Labor Day if weather permits.  Delaware Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University of Delaware Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17 at STAR Tower in the Audion and via UDLive; the meeting is open to public comment with speakers limited to two minutes each.  University of Delaware
  • Thandiwe Nelson-Brooks is named the permanent executive director of the Wilmington VA Medical Center, effective March 8. She has led as interim director since January & now oversees a facility that cares for over 47,000 veterans.  Delaware LIVE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Leaders from the Alzheimer’s Association and American Cancer Society met with lawmakers at Legislative Hall Tuesday morning to advocate for Senate Bill 120 (SB120), which would require Delaware insurers to cover biomarker testing in Alzheimer’s and cancer care. If passed, it will apply to policies issued after Dec. 31.  Delaware LIVE
