EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ During Tuesday’s budget committee hearing, Education Secretary Cindy Marten requested a nearly 4% funding increase—raising the department’s share to nearly $2.4B. The boost aims to improve test scores, graduation rates, and teacher retention + meet rising enrollment needs. Spotlight Delaware

- ➤ Secretary of Education Cindy Marten released the Strategic Plan 2025 to 2028 that sets targets for reading proficiency, graduation rates and early education access statewide. - ➤ Dewey Beach lost three-to-six inches of sand from winter storms & snow, prompting a delay in beach replenishment. Town Manager Bill Zolper said the project, needed every two-to-three years, will be scheduled for next year. Delaware Public Media
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Taxpayers can file 2025 returns starting Jan. 26, with federal filings due by April 15 and Delaware state returns by April 30. The IRS expects most refunds via direct deposit in less than 21 days (paper checks may take over four weeks). Delaware Online
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Delaware General Assembly introduced the 2026 Legislative Fellows, a program where 16 students (10 from the Biden School and 2 from Delaware State University) will work three days a week until June supporting lawmakers with research. - ➤ Delaware lawmakers are debating Senate Bill 205, which would require large electric users to meet vague guidelines before expanding operations; advocates warn it may slow job growth and infrastructure investment. - ➤ Even if you did not work in 2025, Delaware guidelines advise residents to file a state tax return if any withholding occurred or if they might qualify for refunds — Tax Day is Wednesday, April 15. Residents should review income thresholds to confirm eligibility. Delaware Online
